As far as waterfalls, our favorites are in Crawford Notch–heading Eastbound on 302. There's a couple right on the side of the road as you decend in Crawford Notch, but one of our top favorites is on the other side of the notch - Arethusa Falls. It takes about 2 hours total (roundtrip) to hike, and culminates with the tallest waterfall in NH. Worth the moderate hike! If you prefer something a bit easier, Ripley Falls, just before Arethusa, is a 0.5 mile trip each way, and also quite spectacular, especially in the late spring and early summer. In the North Conway area, Diana’s Baths on West Side Road is also always popular, and a very easy hike. Great spot for a dip in the cool mountain water, as well!

Also very close to the house, two of our favorite trails are found in the Zealand area, just a couple of miles West on 302. The Zealand Trail is mostly flat, and meanders through beaver ponds and very scenic woodland areas. It becomes steeper as you head towards the AMC “Zealand Hut,” and culminates in a small but very scenic waterfall. To get to the Zealand area, take a left at the driveway, then a left at the campground (1.3mi) and follow it to the very end, where you will find a parking area.

Also within easy reach of the house is Franconia Notch - you probably drove through it on your way up. Head West on 302, and at the traffic light in Twin Mountain, take a left onto Rt 3 South. Some of our favorite hikes are between the Cannon Mountain ski resort, and the town of Lincoln. -Cannon Mountain’s aerial tramway is an easy way to get to the top and soak in amazing views which on a clear day span New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont and all the way into Canada. - The flume gorge is a beautiful moss-covered gorge, with a wooden walkway that takes you around past numerous rapids and small waterfalls. - The basin is also a very easy walk, even with little ones. The river forms a “swirl” and has carved really interesting waterslide-like formations in the granite. Very cool! - There are also many other hikes here, all very well indicated with parking facilities. You can’t go wrong!

The most popular waterfall of the Pinkham Notch area is the 64-foot plunge known as Glen Ellis Falls. With a fine spray of water throughout the warmer months, this waterfall attracts thousands of vacationers from all over. A short walk down a series of staircases will get your blood pumping on the way back up, but this waterfall is well worth it.

Ripley Falls is a beautiful 100-foot waterfall flowing over a smooth rock wall. The rock wall is at about a 60-degree angle, causing the rushing mountain water to maintain contact with the rock during most of its descent. There are only short, temporary periods where the water jumps away from the rock wall. Because of this, Ripley Falls, as an entire structure, is one of the steepest-angled slides in all of New England.

Arethusa Falls is believed to be the tallest single-drop waterfall that is trail-accessible in New England. However, its height is of great controversy. Depending upon the source, Arethusa Falls is anywhere from 125 feet tall to "well over 200 feet in height." Several other sources believe the falls to be about 160 feet, which seems most reasonable until an official measurement is made.

Wildcat Mountain is a long ridge consisting of five subpeaks named, from north to south: Wildcat A (4422 feet) Wildcat B (4330 feet) Wildcat C (4298 feet) Wildcat D (4062 feet) and Wildcat E (4046 feet) For peakbaggers, the two that count on the New Hampshire 4000 footer list are Wildcat A and Wildcat D. The mountain provides some interesting and challenging hiking, but what it has to offer more than anything else is the spectacular view of the Presidential Range. Just a few miles to the west lies Mt. Washington, and the view from Wildcat is straight into Tuckerman Ravine and Huntington Ravine. Several other lesser New Hampshire and Maine ranges are also visible from the many lookouts along the Wildcat Ridge Trail, which is also the Appalachian Trail. Sebago Lake in Maine and the Atlantic Ocean are visible on the clearest days. The mountain is a good day hike. A loop of the ridge requires a car spot at the trail ends.

The Cog is the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world, and the only one currently operating in North America. With an average grade of 25% (some sections approach nearly 38%), it’s also the second steepest in the world! Motive power is primarily provided by a fleet of seven powerful biodiesel locomotives, each custom designed, built and maintained on site. And with a nod to its steam heritage, the railway also continues to operate a pair of century-old, coal-fired steam engines.

Highest peak of its namesake Twin Range, South Twin Mountain is also the eighth-highest mountain in New Hampshire according to the AMC list and the ninth-highest on the New England Hundred Highest list. The summit rocks offer long views in all directions, including the highest mountains in New Hampshire: the nearby Franconia Range to the west and southwest, and the Presidential Range off to the northeast. The view also includes the entire Pemigewassett Wilderness and the Sandwich Range beyond it. South Twin is a fairly popular day hike from the north, usually after passing over North Twin but also via the Gale River Trail to Garfield Ridge. The mountain is also commonly climbed as part of a longer hike after a night at Galehead Hut, located on a col to the west of the summit. The hut and the summit lie on the Appalachian Trail, so South Twin gets thousands of visitors each year.

Mount Hale is a 4,055 foot mountain in the Twin Range in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, Grafton County in the White Mountains. The mountain is named after Reverend Edward Everett Hale. The shortest trail up to the summit of Mount Hale is the Hale Brook Trail. Mount Hale is considered one of the easiest hikes out of all the 4,000 footers. It is a short 2.2 mile hike to the summit, and a relatively straight path. This is not one of the more popular 4,000 footers because of it's very limited summit views. The summit is basically an open circle field with a big cairn (rock pile, usually a summit indicator) in the center, surrounded by trees. There is evidence of a fire tower that used to be there. Your best bet to see any views is to climb up the cairn and look out, but even then, the views are limited.

he 4.2 mile class 2 Tuckerman Ravine Trail starts at the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center (2050') and is one of the shortest, most scenic, and most popular trails to the summit used by both hikers and skiers. This well signed trail initially follows a dirt road (you will see snowcat tracks here during the winter) reaching Hermit Lake (3875') in 2.4 miles. Here you will find some shelters, a first aid cache, a ranger station, and catch your first glimpses of the Tuckerman Bowl which is a vibrant green during the summer and pure white during the winter. Head directly into the ravine and up the trail on the far (west) side where you will climb the headwall. In 1.2 miles you will reach Tuckerman Junction, an intersection of 5 trails (including one to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut). From here head north 0.6 miles to the summit complex (6288') During the snow free months, the top portion is a large class 2 rock field. Be careful during the early winter months on this route if the rocks are just iced over enough to be slippery but not enough for effective use of crampons.
