Advertised as a coffee shop, but SO much more: cafe, art gallery and performance space. Cafe menu is brief but always excellent. Art gallery, reading room and free wifi make for an interesting eatery. Check online for monthly performance events. This park is located in the commercial center and heart of downtown Detroit. Lots to see and do in a 2-block span: gardens, music stage, historic monuments, free events, programs and classes—like free yoga on Saturdays. In summer, there's a sandy beach. In winter, an ice rink. Eat at The Fountain Detroit, full-service restaurant and bar right in the park.

Vibrant Mexican community with tons of restaurants, bars, and bakeries. One of my favs is Xochimilco Restaurant. Even if you don't want to eat Mexican food, this area is a must see for the beautiful murals, awesome views of the Ambassador Bridge to Canada, and the Bagely Street Pedestrian Bridge, which gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stand above 10 lanes of highway traffic.

Once a neglected and overgrown railway passage, the Dequindre Cut is now a wonderful walk/bike path that leads down to the riverfront. From there you can then ride along the river to Hart Plaza and the Renaissance Center. Contact me if you want to rent bikes from the Moran St Bike Shop right around the corner from your flat. For me, a must on Saturday morning. Get some coffee at the famous Germack Coffee Roasting Co and then "see and be seen." Stroll through each shed filled with farmers and gardeners selling their wares. Shed 5 houses the Kid Rock Kitchen Commons with a community kitchen offering free cooking lessons. While I've never gone any other day but Saturday, Eastern Mkt has a Sunday Street Fair with Detroit and MI-based artists selling handmade crafts, vintage clothing, specialty foods, and antiques.

City plaza in downtown Detroit along the Detroit River marks the spot where Cadillac, Detroit's founder, landed in 1701. The plaza and riverwalk are home to several must-see historical monuments and art sculptures. Beautiful views of Windsor, Ontario!

Once a bustling rail depot and office to the MI Central Railroad (my dad's first job out of college), this station also catered to Amtrak until service ended in the late 1980s. It seems so odd that such a massive, majestic building (on the National Register of Historic Places) now sits idle. Located in Corktown and kinda hard to miss, be sure to drive by when you visit this area of the City.

Historic point of interest because this is the oldest surviving neighborhood in Detroit. While mostly residential, there are lots of great shops, bars and restaurants. Of special note: Fall 2016, Detroit is testing a program called Open Streets, temporarily closing off the portion of Michigan Avenue that runs through Corktown and converting it to a pedestrian-and bike-only zone.
