The beautiful, peaceful garden, an extremely well restored Newari houses and the best and most unique gift shop in Patan and consistently good food. Worth the markup.

Ultra classic Newari food spot that serves everything -- and I mean everything -- from the traditional Newari kitchen at a consistently high standard for very reasonable prices. Make sure to try their homemade chyang and raksi/ailaa, which are great. The rooftop views are fantastic. Highly recommended and definitely off the beaten tourist track, though it's well known and frequented by Nepalis across the valley.

Drinks & Nightlife

You definitely won't find this place in any guidebooks. Visible from our balcony, this is a good and relatively hygienic neighborhood "bhatti". It's unglamorous on the inside but climb the stairs for the relaxed rooftop balcony. There is good traditional Newar food and very good traditional alcoholic drinks of raksi and chyang. I highly recommend the chyang, they serve it the right way in brass cups. The price is very, very right.

Base Camp is the closest Nepal gets to a hipster bar and one of the few true bars in Patan. On many nights it has a live band playing anything from cheesy Bollywood songs to experimental electronic. Stays open until 12, unlike everywhere else in Patan. Pretty consistently great spot, if a bit far from the house.

A big open air market with all the fruits, veggies, lentils, grains, rices and questionable meats/fish you could ever want. Extremely local, extremely close and extremely cheap. Make sure to wash off whatever you buy from here.

Sightseeing

Your guidebook will tell you everything to do in Patan -- of which there is so much. After you get your fill of Patan head to Kirtipur for a very beautiful, well preserved and off the beaten path Newar city. Despite being only 20 minutes ride away from Patan it feels like a different world and makes for a great quiet afternoon, topped off with food from Newa Lahana.
