A decade ago, Q's mall used to be the largest shopping mall in all Kansai (now only the third largest) and the dollar stores there and all around us offer amazing cheap but wonderful products.
Discount stores like "Japan" or "Mega-Donkey" are very convinient and some stay open all night long till 4 or 5-o-clock in the morning.

We have everything nearby including 5 or more supermarkets. The more distant Gyomu Supermarket has the better deals like a box of bananas (20 bunches) for $7 sometimes in the summer, pineapples for a dollar, bottled drinks for as little as $0.30, and even a box sweet potatoes for $6 in the spring. Yes, Japan can be expensive but if you know where to shop, it can also be very very cheap to survive on with very little funds if necessary!
