The hilltop was fortified even before the arrival of the Roman legions; in later centuries the castle walls were strengthened by Visigoths and Moors, before falling to Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, in 1147. In June, during the Santos Populares festival, this place is the setting of one of the best fairs in the city. The rest of the year, it’s a very typical neighbourhood to visit in the heart of Graça. Vila Berta, with its small buildings, iron bar balconies and ceramic tiles, was built at the start of the 20th century and used to serve as accommodation for local workers. It was derelict for a while, but after various remodellings of the buildings’ façades, it has found new life, and is definitely worth a visit.

one of the most popular destinations in the neighborhood of the Anjos. And among the essential is, of course, the brunch, whether in the normal dose (€ 11.95) or miniature (€ 6.50). Both include a selection of cold meats, cheeses and scrambled eggs, the most expensive offering more variety of breads, salmon, bacon (with eggs), fish from the vegetable garden and a caprese salad. Accompanying her, a cold drink and a hot drink. The lunches are cheap, great and healthy!

The doses, these, are well served, as is the friendliness in the service. Cod to the minhota, beans to the Portuguese, hand of cow with grain and petinga with rice of grelos are of the dishes more requests. The best part? The lunch menu, which includes couvert, dish, drink and coffee, costs only € 6.5.

Then came a nice little café in Graça, with an extended offering based on fresh local produce – and lemonade, of course – and an everyday brunch. What does it include? Greek yogurt with granola and fresh fruit, pancakes with honey, Nutella or berries, avocado, salmon, ham and cheese or tomato mozzarella toast and the lemonade of the day (we recommend strawberry). For an extra €2 you can get fried or scrambled eggs

“Good evening, we have mushrooms as appetizers, the main course is mushrooms, and if you want to split some snacks, we have some – they're mushrooms.” This could be the script for a comedy sketch about Santa Clara dos Cogumelos, a place where fungi reign. There are many species (cultivated, wild and dehydrated) and all dishes are creative. An example? The forest salmon tataki, with fish on a layer of portobello mushrooms; the pumpkin soup with shiitake mushrooms, the mushrooms in vinegar sauce or the Bulhão Pato-style mushrooms. Tue-Fri 7.30pm-11pm; Sat 1pm-3.30pm & 7.30pm-11pmPrice: Up to €30

“Art, food and drink.” That’s the motto of Estaminé, the little house that can only accommodate eight people, but where you can enjoy all of these things. The artwork (ceramics, photographs and postcards) is exposed for everyone to look at. So are the kitchen and owners, Luís and Joice, who prepare their dishes calmly, as if they were in their own house. The mojitos (€5) are delicious. You’ll pay about €20 for two people at this restaurant, which has been number one on TripAdvisor for over a year.

The Madre de Deus Convent is situated in Xabregas, on the western area of Lisboa. The National Azulejo Museum represents the importance of this type of art in the culture, art and architecture of Portugal, that since early times recognized the utility and esthetical beauty of this privileged material, improving its technique of ancestral knowledge. Founded in 1980, the Museum houses some of the most significant exemplars of national Azulejos since the 15th century until nowadays.

Founded in 2010 in a huge warehouse in the neighbourhood of Braço de Prata, it displays artwork by the most publicised artists of this time - from Wasted Rita to Alexandre Farto, who was discovered by Vhils, probably one of the most respected names in Portugal when it comes to urban interventionism.
