Victoria is a lovely place to spend a day, or two. It can be done in one day, but I would recommend not rushing and that you consider spending a night. The ferry takes an hour and a half each way and the ferry is about a 45 minute drive from my house. Lots of shopping, beautiful downtown area with lots to do.
