It's a great spot to see the more authentic side of South Afirca as well.

A market for the foodies just a tuk-tuk ride away, The Playground is best visited as early as opening time. Naturally the most delicious food sells out fast, & this is Jozi's way of gastronomically transporting you around the world.
You can also pick up a cute souvenir here with local vendors showcasing their beautiful wares.
Live bands &/ or djs add to the vibe, and the Joburg crowd really gets into the swing of things around lunchtime. I recommend those with young children exit for naptime as the youthful crowd (often many students from nearby campuses) gets very festive with cocktails & beers flowing freely.
For those who are the youthful crowd - once the market closes shop around evening time the festivities, drinking & dancing continue at bars & clubs across the road, up & down Juta St.

Out of the City
Awesome space for all ages, makes for a great day out - usually in the sunshine. Ground Cafe feels like you've escaped Joburg completely, & even on a winter's day it feels like bliss in Africa. Hiking trails also available on site.

Ubers are generally better quality and, as a woman, I feel safer using them. Bolt has a budget-friendly yellow ‘cab’ option which I’m yet to try.

Bus Routes
Rea Vaya busses go in the direction of Joburg CBD as well as Soweto. It is cashless & tokens can be bought at the bus stop. Metrobuses are connected at Ghandi Square in Joburg CBD with their routes available online.

Driving
I wouldn’t recommend night driving for those unfamiliar driving in Joburg. Joburg drivers can be quite impatient & fast so if new to the roads here I recommend keep left, pass right and be aware of white minibus taxis, and delivery bikes 🫠.

Walking
It is mostly safe to walk around Richmond especially to Rand Steam shopping centre just down the road. I’ve often walked along Napier road with my young daughter to the park. There is also a path through the park to 44 Stanley centre. Avoid being on your mobile phone on the streets as snatches can occur.

Right Hand
Most South Africans give to & accept from you with their right hand. Often the left hand will hold the right at the elbow or wrist when giving/ receiving. It is generally considered rude to pass objects to another person with your left hand.
