Six narrow alleys packed full of tiny bars that seat ~5 people at a time. Not to be missed! Favorited by celebrities, directors, musicians, actors, and artsy types. If you're lucky, you might stumble upon Quentin Tarantino at La Jetee. Arrive after 10pm, and don't feel discouraged if you're turned away from some bars even if the seats are empty; some of the bars are strictly for regulars only, and require a member introduction. It can be expensive to drink in Golden Gai, so bring lots of cash and be prepared to make a night out of it.

You're steps away from the 4th most legendary nightclub in the world. WOMB attracts some of the world's best DJs. The deafening sound system costs the club a whopping $7000 a month in electricity alone to run! The dollar store (Daiso) sells discrete-looking earplugs, and I recommend you bring some with you. But not to worry—WOMB can't be heard from the condo.

This is a pretty laid-back venue, host to a few pretty decent house/techno DJs and frequented by unassuming clientele. There's often no cover unless there's an international guest DJ. The R Lounge doesn't come as my recommendation if you're looking for a wild nightclub experience in Tokyo, but if you're looking for a smaller, less judgmental way to start the night, it's a good fit!

One of the best bars in Roppongi for meeting people, getting drunk, and feeling like an essential part of the party. If you're feeling brave you can take the 15 shot challenge and get your name on a plaque on the wall. Oh, there's also a gong and you can thank me for mentioning it later. If you hit it, you have to buy everyone in the bar a shot. If someone else happens to strike the gong, you get a free shot. This rookie tourist mistake happens at least a couple times a night ;)

Bubbles, or "baburusu" in Japanese, is a secret little wine bar, tucked away down a side street in the many alleys featuring Dogenzaka's love hotels. The only signage for this establishment is a tiny framed photo of a monkey's face with the word "bubbles" that rests on the ground outside the entrance. This is a great spot for a date in a quieter, more intimate, yet stylish setting. Besides the fabulous wine bar, they feature cheese, rare honey, and exquisite snacks like rare ikasumi beef (beef darkened with squid ink).

Coming home from the club at some ungodly hour and looking for late night eats? Look no further than Hokkaido Ramen. This place is pretty no-frills, but they have incredibly delicious "butter corn" ramen (topped with a cube of butter!) that's going to take the edge off your hangover the following day. Best spot for spicy miso ramen, hands down. After you buy your ramen ticket from the vending machine out front and hand it to the waitress, be sure to specify how spicy you'd like your ramen. The sake here is also pretty good value, as they're accustomed to overpour so that it overflows into a square dish that you also get to drink.
