Also known as 11 Inch Pizza, these guys do fantastic, thin crust pizza with fresh ingredients and great flavour. You can grab a bottle of wine from the IGA next door or enjoy whatever beer they have on tap. If it's a warm night grab a table outside to really soak up the sunshine

The best coffee near the appartment. They always have fresh pastries on offer as well. Later in the day this turns into a wine bar with a fantastic selection of local and imported wines.

The New York Times thinks these might be the best croissants in the world. After eating my way through all the croissants in Paris, I might even be inclined to agree. Gone are the days when you had to line up before 6am to even get a crumb, they now have two locations (Fitzroy and Collins St in the CBD) and can be found in cafes around Melbourne. While the classic croissant is pretty hard to go past, consider getting one of their more experimental flavours as well. I once had a carbonara croissant there and it changed my life.

Melbourne is pretty proud of our coffee culture, and Aunty Peg's is pretty much 'peak Melbourne coffee'. With rotating single origins, a plethora of brewing options and staff who are happy to let you pick their brain, if you like coffee you really can't not visit. Go along to a public cupping if possible. They're normally free and it's a great way to learn a little more about coffee and what goes into getting bean to cup. And while the price may seem exorbitant, a cup of HR-61 (when they have it) can be a mind blowing experience - no gimmicks, just really good coffee.

Parks & Nature

Just a quick walk up Dorcas St and you'll be at the Shrine of Remembrance and the Royal Botanic Gardens. There is a running track around the outside that's known as The Tan or if you're after a lazy day you can pack a picnic lunch and stretch out on one of the lawns inside. Just keep an eye out for the black swans, if they're after your lunch they can be pretty aggressive!

Drinks & Nightlife

Ponyfish is located in the middle of the Yarra river which means some great views of the city, a great place to grab a drink in summer

The Croft Institute lets you get a bit of your late night mad scientist on. It's tucked way down a dingy alleyway in Chinatown and the crowd is always a little bit eclectic. Expect syringes in your drinks and a pumping DJ set on the weekends. The Croft is one of the city's oldest laneway bars and they still set the standard.

1806 is the best cocktail bar in Melbourne and a great spot to start the night if you're after some old world glamour. Let the bartender know what you like and if they don't have something on the menu they'll be able to whip up something special

One of my favourite rooftop bars in Melbourne. A little smaller than some of the ones on Swanston St, but fantastic views of the city and a great drinks list. What's not to love?

You can do a whole bar crawl without leaving Curtin House. Start with Rooftop to either soak up the last rays of sunshine or catch a flick at their moonlight cinema before moving downstairs to Cookie for thai food and killer cocktails and then The Toff In Town for live music and some more drinks. Cookie is definitely my favourite of the bunch but there's something magic about watching the sun set over beer and burgers at Rooftop. Be warned though, the stairs might just kill you.

Sightseeing

Both the Anderson St bridge and the nearby Swan St bridge have great views along the Yarra river to the city. If you go in the mornings the river will be filled with rowers but keep an eye out for dolphins as well. Every few months they will make their way out of the bay and come exploring up the Yarra.

These brightly coloured beach boxes make for a super cute photo spot and if the weather is nice you can stretch out on the sand or go for a swim as well. They sell for over $300k each at this point and many have been owned by the same family for generations. Go early in the morning to try and avoid the crowds, when you're done the nearby Brighton Baths are the perfect spot to grab coffee or cool off

Shopping

I love Pete'n'Rosie's Deli for their fantastic selection of local and imported cheeses, Market Lane do some of the best coffee in Melbourne and the cheese toasties from the stall in the produce hall are truly to die for! The market is a must visit for any true foodie. (Closed Monday & Wednesday)

The South Melbourne Market is just a short walk from the apartment and has a huge selection of goods, not just food and fresh produce. It's a great spot to find a memorable souvenir or something that's authentically Melbourne, be it clothing, jewellery or knick-knacks. (Closed Monday, Tuesday and Thursday)

Arts & Culture

Unimelb is my alma mater and I have many a fond memory of relaxing on South Lawn with smuggled beers. The Old Arts building and the clock tower and both beautiful but if you like plants its worth taking the time to check out System Gardens behind the botany building, even when campus is overrun with people the gardens are normally much calmer which makes them the perfect spot to relax with lunch or a good book
