A Few Restaurant Suggestions

There are a few good places to eat locally. Tucson has such a wide variety. I will include a few of our favorites to get you started. If you are looking for a specific type of food, text me, and we will see what we can recommend.
If you have never had Ethiopian food, but are up for a unique experience, give Zemam's a try. If you have had Ethiopian, enjoy. Make sure to check the hours before you go, they do close between lunch and dinner for prep time. We love the ground beef dish (we never remember the name, but they know exactly what we mean). This place is also great for vegetarians, as they have many options. Basically, your food is served on a circular metal sheet (like a flat pizza pan) on a piece of Injera (sourdough bread that is flat like a crepe). The platter is placed in the middle of the table (usually with one or two bonus scoops of something else to try, my husband called them sides). You are given a plate with pieces of Injera, rip off a piece of Injera and use it to scoop up some of the dish on the platter. No forks needed, but plenty of napkins.

About 10 minutes south. Mod Pizza is a quick pizza place where everyone gets to customize their own individual pizza or salad. You start with the crust type (or salad choice), and go through the line telling the worker what toppings you would like. They bake the pizza within a few minutes.

You can go out to eat downtown to the Hub, or just grab a scoop of ice cream. The restaurant is a hip design. The menu has something for everyone from sandwiches and burgers to pasta. Their ice cream menu is very elaborate, so check out their website. There is also a Hub ice cream shop across the street if you are just out for dessert.

Great for a date night. This place has no set menu, each day the chef decides on the menu and it is written on a chalkboard. The waiter brings the chalkboard over after you are seated and goes over the day's options. Our favorite is to go with the Chef's special. If you are adventurous and don't have any food allergies, this is the way to go. Each plate is given a smaller selection of 3-4 menu items with a colorful salad. It is really fun to see what you get. If you are more selective, you can order one entree from the menu. Honestly, we have never had a dish there we did not like.

I don't know how I missed adding the Pub to my original list of recommendations. I suppose I see it as a staple to Rancho Sahuarita. Just 5 minutes south on Rancho Sahuarita Blvd., there is a convenient place to feed everyone. From burgers to pasta to salads, and usually some Mexican options you should be able to find something to please everyone. From the El Charo family of restaurants, years ago they converted an El Charo to fit more of the need down here for a place to hang out and grab a drink. They have some outdoor games like giant Jenga and a few board games. Personal recommendation...the Pub mac and cheese, a creamy mac and cheese topped with bacon and bbq pulled pork...yummy.

If you head north on Interstate 19, Harkins is between Valencia and Irvington. We like this theater better than Desert Sky. Harkins is well-kept and not too far away. In fact, if you are planning any trips into Tucson, you pass it while driving on the 19. However, if you have the extra time and are looking for a more unique movie experience, look at the recommendation for Roadhouse Cinemas.

Roadhouse Cinemas is a dine-in movie theater, with reserved seating (make reservations on their website). They have food, drinks, desserts, and even alcoholic beverages all brought to the comfort of your seat during the movie with the push of a button. If you like popcorn, they have the best popcorn I have ever had. The white cheddar popcorn is amazing, and if you like a little spice, go half jalapeno, half white cheddar. If you like sweet popcorn, they have you covered as well. Even better is that it is unlimited and you can even take your bowl to the front popcorn counter on your way out and get a bag to go.

The zoo is a good place to take the kids for a day out. During the summer, make sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. There is a little splash park to help cool you down during the warmer months. There is a nice little cafe at the zoo, or you can pack a lunch and walk over to Reid Park for a picnic. This is an interesting place to go where you can take a tour on a walking path and see the amazing geological formations of the Kartchner Caverns. Go online and schedule a tour before heading out, to guarantee a spot. One of the nice things is that even if it is blazing hot outside, underground is always a consistently cool temperature. This one is not recommended for young children/babies/toddlers that have a hard time being restricted. It is a 30-45 minute tour underground, so some small children have a hard time not being able to wander free.

Here you can wander through historic buildings in the Tucson desert, grab a bite to eat or some old fashioned ice cream, or even catch a wild west show. This is another one out in the desert, so bring water and sunscreen, and expect plenty of sunshine. There are a few rides (kids can drive cars on a track, there is a train ride for the family, and a carousel) and gold panning (for an additional cost).

Ok, so to be honest, this is not one of my family's favorites, but it is a popular Tucson destination so I wanted to include it. Some people can make a day out of it, and read in-depth about the various animals. However, be warned that it is a museum of taxidermy animals. My son (and I, to be honest) find it a little weird staring at room after room of stuffed animals. We usually made it through in an hour. If you are visiting from out of state, and have a membership to a museum that is part of the ASTC, you can double check to see if you can get free admission.

If you have any interest in local history, or military history, this is a nice place to visit for a few hours. You can go online and schedule a tour before going. Once there, you begin with a short video taking you through the history of how the Titan Missile was once an active missile silo and how personnel approached each day. After the video, your group will follow the tour guide below ground where you can see where the staff worked, and even up into the missile silo. There is an elevator if a person cannot handle the stairs down, but do plan on some walking and stairs. This is one of those gems of the desert, so it can be quite warm during the summer months. Make sure to bring water along. The museum is about a 10 minute drive, just hop back on the 19 going south, take the next exit, Duval Mine Rd., head west and you will see signs guiding the way.

We have visited the Desert Museum with young and old family members and everyone has enjoyed their time. There is more here than you can see in a day, so take a look at the map when you get there to make sure you have at least a general idea of what you would like to see. My son has been known to spend at least an hour digging through the rocks where they hide special rocks and allow you to take one home. There are a few underground viewing areas for some of the animals if you want a cooler area to take a rest while observing animals. Some of the paths are dirt, but most areas are accessible by all. There is a nice eating area served cafeteria style, so everyone in your group can have a food choice. It is out in the middle of the desert, so if you go in the warmer months, try to get there early in the morning. If it is the winter, know that people come from all over the world to see the beauty of the desert, so the parking lot can get busy as the day progresses. If the weather is nice, I would also advise keeping an eye out as you drive out there, since bicycles may be sharing the road as you go over a hill.

The Biosphere 2 is a unique experience. Years ago, scientists experimented with creating a replica of Earth with various biomes. You can take a tour through a rainforest, a desert, and look down on a small-scale ocean. The tour guide tells you about the experiment and the research that is still taking place today. I would not recommend it for little children that may get restless during the tour.
