The grounds are nestled among picturesque mountains, streams and canyons where the rich and famous have been staying for decades. You can walk through the grounds even if you’re not lodging there. Enjoy one of the many restaurants and cafes or read a book in one of the elaborate lobbies. Dog friendly. Christmas time is especially beautiful after dark. But be aware they limit the number of non-guests after dark, due to the volume of visitors during the holidays. It’s a guessing game and you may or may not gain entry. Cave of the Winds – In town, $23 or less Early legends by the Apaches over a thousand years ago, tell of a cave near Manitou Springs. History books show the cave being discovered by settlers in 1881. When two brothers named George and John Pickett went exploring for new caves in the Williams Canyon area, they discovered what we now know as Cave of the Winds. As they approached the entrance, their candles flickered in the wind blowing from a nearby crevice. This signaled them to explore further, and when they crawled through the limestone archway, they discovered a large chamber unlike anything seen before. This discovery promised the Pickett brothers an amazing and dramatic new underground world to explore. Now you too can experience their adventure. Additionally, there are ziplines, rope courses and other rides suspended over a canyon that’s sure to make you scream. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo – In town, $24 or less (online purchase only, at this time) Way beyond observing. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s 146 picturesque acres are home to animals of every variety from around the globe. With its distinctive mountainside setting at an elevation of 6,714, you’ll zig-zag on switchbacks up the side of the mountain to discover wild animals, engaging exhibits (feed a baby giraffe) and irresistible attractions. Or, you can glide over top of the animal habitats by taking the ski lift to the top and walking down. Manitou Cliff Dwellings In town, $12 or less Explore the fascinating architecture of the ancient Anasazi Indians and browse through two museums featuring cultural displays. The Native American culture is sure to delight visitors of all ages. Garden of the Gods – In town, No Fee Explore Colorado Springs' paradise in one magical stop. Garden of the Gods Park is a registered National Natural Landmark. Imagine dramatic views, 300' towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and brilliant blue skies. This world-class Visitor & Nature Center and museum across the street is the most visited attraction in the region with all new interactive exhibits. Learn how the amazing red rocks got there with the NEW Geo-Trekker theater experience, shown every 20 minutes. Delight in one of Colorado's most photographed views while eating in our glass-enclosed café or from our terrace overlooking Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods.
