Since 1976, the Toe River Arts Council has been working to connect the arts and the community. The Council is dedicated to enhancing the lives of the people who live in this region through arts-related experiences and education. We are proud of our work in the schools, with the artists, for our residents and for those who may just be passing through. Studies show that we learn through hands-on enterprises, whether in school or out, 8 or 80. The Toe River Arts Council creates realities out of those possibilities.

Parks & Nature

One of those places that stand apart from the ordinary, Mount Mitchell’s dramatic summit is the highest point east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet and was inspiration for one of the nation’s first state parks. From its easily accessible observation deck, the spruce-fir forest of Mount Mitchell State Park leads the eye to unmatched views. A museum explains the mountain’s cultural and natural history, and its trail network allows visitors to explore up close, offering short hikes near the summit and challenging treks leading to adjacent wilderness areas.

Crabtree Falls is located in the Crabtree Falls & Meadows Recreation Area at Milepost 339.5 of the Blue Ridge Parkway (about 45 miles north of Asheville) and is accessed by woodland hiking trail with two options: An easier 3-mile hike to and from on the same trail with a steady descent and return climb. Or a more strenuous 3.5-mile loop trail that climbs a ridge above the falls. It's a beautiful hike, complete with plenty of wildflowers. The 70-foot waterfall is definitely worth the trek!

Entertainment & Activities

Annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans brings the color of hundreds of tartan plaids and the clamor of half a dozen bagpipe bands to the North Carolina Highlands. The Grandfather Games are considered America’s grandest Games because of the spectacular mountain setting that is so reminiscent of Scotland. The deep blue peaks of 6,000-foot Grandfather Mountain tower above a meadow ringed by 167 red, blue, yellow and green striped tents. The color is augmented by thousands of Scots decked out in their finest tartan plaids, and the energy is amplified by the sounds of bagpipes and kettledrums echoing across the moor.
