Houghton Lodge Gardens

Houghton Lodge Gardens has been described by recent visitors as ‘the jewel of the Test Valley’, and ‘A Stately Pleasure-Dome on the most romantic river in England’. It has been the home of the Busk family for more than a century, and still is. It provides a perfect setting for corporate entertaining and romantic weddings. Some people visit Houghton for its architecture, some for its literary connections and some for its gardens; but everyone leaves with a sense of its ageless tranquillity and special magic. It is little wonder that Country Life readers voted it in such numbers for their search for ‘England’s Favourite Country House’. You are welcome to drop in and enjoy refreshments without purchasing an entry into the gardens. Cyclists We welcome visits from cyclists Dogs Dogs are welcome on short leads. Parking There is plenty of free car parking at Houghton Lodge Gardens. Shop A few items of selected gift ware are available to purchase from our shop. How To Find Us Houghton Lodge is in the heart of the Test Valley, only an hour and a half from Central London, a simple and usually fast journey straight down the M3 and the A30. We are five minutes from the local town of Stockbridge. Follow the signs to Houghton Lodge Gardens. Winchester and Andover are our nearest mainline stations (to/from London, Waterloo). Houghton Lodge has half a mile on one of the main carriers of The River Test. We take pride in trying to provide some of the best fishing this beautiful river can offer and maintain stocks to a very high level. The beat has its own fishing huts and private car parking. It is beautifully kept, with good casting and little obstruction. The fishing is mainly brown trout with some grayling and occasional rainbow trout; fishermen may keep a brace of fish if they require. We can provide fishing hampers or on the bank catering. With twin bed accommodation available onsite, it makes the ideal break for a father and son. We have a great pub, The Boot Inn, within walking distance. Guides and private tuition are also available. During the mayfly the price is £200 per rod and at all other times the price is £150 a rod. In the winter grayling and pike fishing is available. Stocking and returning fish If you wish to take fish home we would be grateful if you could limit yourself to 1 and 1/2 brace per day. Please return any fish under 2 lbs. Fishing style Upstream dry fly only until 30th June, and thereafter an unweighted upstream nymph may be used. Wading is not permitted and unnecessary! Fisherman’s lunch Baskets Choose one of our gourmet house baskets. Baskets must be paid for at the time of booking and will be delivered to the fishing hut on the day. Longstock Park Water Gardens (John Lewis Partnership)

It's a great place for a day out whether you're a keen gardener, seasoned horticulturalist or you're visiting Hampshire and want to explore this hidden gem. The Water Gardens covers around seven acres and was originally created by the Beddington family during the early 1900's. The water gardens became part of the estate in 1942 and since then the gardens have been nurtured and developed to become the finest, famous water gardens. John Spedan Lewis spent much of his later life in these gardens and whilst the gardens remain true to this time, our philosophy is to evolve the landscape so that it remains a vibrant, tranquil and beautiful place to visit. The water remains crystal clear, connecting the two islands and woodland valleys; Longstock and Leckford together. This giant, yet intimate garden attracts visitors from all over the world and have become famous water gardens in their own right. The garden is a true spectacle, hosting an array of plants from around the world. It is the perfect location and setting to nurture a diverse amount of wild plants, with over forty different waterlilies alone. This entices people from all around the world, inviting them to appreciate the experience, relax and enjoy the views. It's a great place for a day out whether you're a keen gardener, seasoned horticulturalist or you're visiting Hampshire and want to explore this hidden gem. The Water Gardens covers around seven acres and was originally created by the Beddington family during the early 1900's. The water gardens became part of the estate in 1942 and since then the gardens have been nurtured and developed to become the finest, famous water gardens. John Spedan Lewis spent much of his later life in these gardens and whilst the gardens remain true to this time, our philosophy is to evolve the landscape so that it remains a vibrant, tranquil and beautiful place to visit. The water remains crystal clear, connecting the two islands and woodland valleys; Longstock and Leckford together. This giant, yet intimate garden attracts visitors from all over the world and have become famous water gardens in their own right. The garden is a true spectacle, hosting an array of plants from around the world. It is the perfect location and setting to nurture a diverse amount of wild plants, with over forty different waterlilies alone. This entices people from all around the world, inviting them to appreciate the experience, relax and enjoy the views. They initially raised enough money to re-open the line as a heritage railway from Alresford to Ropley in 1977 and continued to raise funds to relay the track to Medstead & Four Marks and then to join up with the main railway network at Alton in 1985. Today the railway runs the full 10 miles between the market towns of Alresford and Alton, preserving an important piece of our 1940’s – 70’s railway heritage for this generation and many more to follow.

Built in 1539 by Henry VIII, Calshot Castle is one of number of similar forts built to defend the south coast from the French and Spanish. Calshot beach is home to one of the UK's biggest outdoor and watersport centres. The Calshot Activities Centre offers a range of activities including windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and climbing. The centre is located in a hangar which was built to house the flying boats of the Calshot Naval Air Station. On the other side of the spit is an extensive salt marsh which is home to a wealth of birds and other wildlife. Calshot is often cited as being a nudist / naturist beach. Whilst we can find references to this from a few years back it seems the owners of the beach (Manor of Cadland) very much frown upon this and have threatened to take legal action against anyone going the full monty. Calshot beach is home to one of the UK's biggest outdoor and watersport centres. The Calshot Activities Centre offers a range of activities including windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and climbing. The centre is located in a hangar which was built to house the flying boats of the Calshot Naval Air Station. On the other side of the spit is an extensive salt marsh which is home to a wealth of birds and other wildlife. Calshot is often cited as being a nudist / naturist beach. Whilst we can find references to this from a few years back it seems the owners of the beach (Manor of Cadland) very much frown upon this and have threatened to take legal action against anyone going the full monty.
