Our favourite eating places in Sydney 😋

Our favourite Chinese restaurant in Chinatown (Haymarket) - an easy 10-15 min walk from our place. It’s a cheap and cheerful place for lunch or dinner. Don’t be fooled by its name - it serves more than just beef noodles. Must-try dishes include salt and pepper tofu, shantung chicken, fried noodles with chicken in XO sauce and dumplings.

This is our one and only go-to ramen restaurant in Sydney. Not the cheapest in town - could set you back by $20+ for a bowl of ramen, but it’s soooo good! Located on Liverpool Street (between World Square and Hyde Park), it’s immensely popular, especially on Friday and Saturday. So, either get there early or be prepared to wait in the queue.

This is where we’d go if we are dining locally (breakfast/lunch). Great food and coffee, and super friendly staff.

Literally at our doorstep, Jason makes great salads, and his sweets are to die for, especially the hummingbird cake (Joseph’s favourite) and the cheese cake (Paul’s favourite).

Our favourite yum cha restaurant. Much, much better and cheaper than those in Chinatown (Haymarket). Located in Cabramatta, it’s a 50-min train ride from Central. A good excuse to get out of the city to check out Cabramatta - a slice of Vietnam in Sydney!

Best banh mi in Sydney at this hole-in-the-wall institution in Marrickville. If you are not a fan of pork, they do have chicken, vegetarian, etc.

An open-air, South-East Asian style kind of hawker centre along this famous eat street - Kensington Street, Chippendale. There are many other restaurants of all types here. Definitely worth checking out. A mere 5-10 min walk from our place.

THE place to get a panoramic view of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, but if and only if there are no towering cruise ships blocking the view. You don’t have to patronise the cafe to enjoy the view. The food here is okay and reasonably priced.

If you have a free day and are feeling adventurous, take a 50-min train ride from Central to explore Cabramatta. When I first visited the place, I felt like I was somewhere in Vietnam! I won’t give too much away. While you are here, go to Vinh Phat restaurant for yum cha.

A modern Chinese art gallery in the local area. Free entry. If you have not had much exposure to modern Chinese art, this is a good start. Seriously. If you are a fan, be amazed!

Local shopping

One of two shopping centres in the local area. The other one being Central Park. Broadway is the bigger of the two. About a 10-min walk from where we are.
