Food Scene

Yummy bagels, good coffee and friendly staff. depending on when you go there might be a line but they're pretty efficient and you won't have to wait too long.

A stylish little cafe, also just down the hill. It's run by a young local couple who work hard to make you good coffee and Danish fare - the menu is relatively minimalist with a bunch of different fancy porridge options and a few other things. Exhibitions by local artists change regularly.

Sightseeing

I'm biased, since this is my workplace - but this is a top quality garden covering about 30 hectares. The lower part is all pretty flower gardens and more of a formal design and as you venture up the hill you discover the bigger plant collections, bird aviary and lots of peaceful nooks and crannies.

Mt Cargill is a volcanically sculpted hill that looks over North Dunedin . Around 680m high, it's the tallest hill in the area and can be spotted easily because of the big radio tower on the top. there's also an awesome lookout up there . on a nice day you get the whole lay of the land spread before you , blueskin bay and the northern coast , out over the Dunedin harbour and the Otago Peninsula, and inland towards the mountain ranges of Otago . if you are up for a hike, you can drive to Bethunes Gully at the end of nearby North East Valley and walk up to the summit and down again . Allow yourself 3 hrs or so. You walk through old exotic Pine Forest, then native bush with tree ferns and conifers, up through subalpine scrubland leading to a big open flat carparky space with that massive radio tower looming above you architecturally. Alternatively there is a gravel road that takes you straight up to the top . Fewer endorphins , but still a nice view and it's a great way to get the lay of the land and scope out spots you'd like to visit (so many beaches!)

Cosy local hangout with an eclectic bunch of friendly punters and a great and ever changing selection of craft beers. The space is tiny but they still manage to squeeze in gigs, comedy and open mic nights from time to time.

good running spots

Track networks around a local water reservoir through regenerated native bush ... they link up in all sorts of ways passing waterfalls and trickly bits of creek and linking up with tracks further out into dunedins hills - such as McGouns track and the Pineapple tracks that can take you all the way to Flagstaff or Swampy Summit . local fave for joggers and dog walkers.
