JL’s fits the bill perfectly if you’re looking for a cozy, colorful, and authentic Irish pub. Most of the restaurant is bar counter with a small sit-down area. A family-owned favorite that aims to provide family fun as well. They charge by cup size, not weight, for their delicious frozen yogurt – so heap those self-serve toppings high! If you’re craving a post-hike pizza that really hits the spot, Chesley’s is our favorite. Yes, it may be a gas station on the outside, but don’t be fooled. This brewpub is built into an 18th century grist mill on the Ammonoosuc River, with a focus on European-style craft beer and wood-fired artisan pizza. While surrounded by the clean, rustic vibes at Schilling, its easy to feel like you really are somewhere in Europe enjoying the best brew you’ve ever tasted. There is also an adjacent tasting room with a deck, and a seasonal food truck that serves burgers, dogs, and poutine. Park on Mill Street or park at the end of Riverglen Drive so you can walk across the covered bridge to get there. Hikes

(moderate) We love this hike because you can customize it to fit your abilities and your available time. One option is hiking the whole 4 mile loop, which takes you to three viewpoints: The Ledges, Welch Mountain, and Dickey Mountain. However, if we have less than an hour to hike, we often just hike up to “The Ledges,” the first viewpoint which sits below Welch Mountain. No matter how far you go, this hike provides a lot of bang for your buck, and rarely can you find a hike that offers so many beautiful views in such a short loop. Be cautious, in rain or wintry conditions, it does get slippery.

(easy) This is a flat hiking and running trail that loops around beautiful Smarts Brook. The main loop is about 3 miles, and is beautiful at any time of year, especially when winter creates beautiful icicles running off the gorge into the brook. Just beware of icy patches beside the gorge. In summer, you can make your way to the Smarts Brook swimming hole, which is a 2.2 mile out-and-back trek on flat terrain. From the Smarts Brook trailhead, turn left and follow that main trail through the hemlock trees until you get to a logging road. Turn left at the intersection on the logging road. You will see the brook on your left after awhile and when you enter a forest protection area, you will find the entrance to the swimming hole through the trees.

(difficult) (6.5 miles out/back, both peaks) Both Noon Peak and Jennings Peak have five star views, though Jennings is definitely worth the extra mile up. The whole hike is about 6.5 miles out-and-back. If you’d prefer to hike only Noon Peak, you’ll be hiking about 3.4 miles round trip. You’ve got to earn your views on this one; the hike is very steep, especially the first section up Noon Peak, and it can be muddy. The free exercise is well worth it.

(difficult) (6.1 miles round trip) This is one of New Hampshire’s famous 4,000 footers and boasts 4,315 elevation. From the top on a clear day, you’ll be able to see Mount Washington and many of the other peaks in the White Mountains. The summit is a large rock slab which makes a well-deserved picnic spot after your trek up 2,070 feet of elevation gain. If you’ve got energy left, you can bag another peak, East Osceola, which is 1 mile from Osceola’s summit. The bridge between the two peaks involves lots of scrambling over rocks. You even have the option of some almost vertical climbing through a spot called “The Chimney,” though there is a bypass trail on the side.

(easy) A must-see natural area that’s also handicap-accessible. The main attraction here is a wide natural “basin” eroded by the relentless rushing waterfall above. We know Henry David Thoreau visited this spot in 1839, when he wrote in his journal that “this pothole is perhaps the most remarkable curiosity of its kind in New England.” If you wander further past the Basin, the whole family can enjoy scrambling along smooth eroded rock and wading in sections off the side of the main trail. Other walking trails branch off beside the Pemigewasset River, and picnic tables are sprinkled along the main trail as well, so pack your lunch and enjoy your whole afternoon at the Basin. You can access the Basin from the northbound or southbound highway.

(moderate) Georgiana Falls is a 30 foot waterfall which splits into scintillating cascades all the way down. It's 1.6 miles out and back, but we thoroughly recommend adding a mile to your round-trip hike and climbing higher to see Harvard Falls. Harvard Falls feeds directly into Georgiana, and there’s a beautiful “infinity pool” at the top. Yes, you can swim in it! The trail is steep and it can be tough to keep track of the blazes. However, the brook is visible most of the way, so as long as you follow the water you’ll be fine.
