Broadway Market is one of London's historic markets - and in fact its roots can be traced back 3000 years to Roman times. These days it's a beautiful working Victorian Street that hosts many independent shops, bars and restaurants, and on a Saturday has one of London's best markets. You can spend an afternoon sampling the foodie delights and buying all manner of things from independent traders, who are often local craftspeople. There are also a number of good local pubs along the road - The Dove has an excellent - and vast - selection of beers, as well as good value Thai food, Off Broadway is a great little cocktail bar that is still almost an east London secret, and the Cat and Mutton has great music as well as great drinks.

Hackney Empire is a fabulous Victorian theatre still running today that has a variety of great shows, and there's a brilliant designer shopping outlet (with the likes of Aquascutum, Pringle, Gucci, Matches, and Nike) on Morning Lane.

It's a beautiful place to spend some time - you can walk or cycle the circumference, stopping for a coffee and cake at the lovely Pavilion cafe, with a view of the lake, or at the Royal Inn on the Park for something stronger. You can take pedalos out on the lake in summer, and during those months there are often fairs or big concerts taking place in the park. Even in winter it's lovely for a stroll, and on a Sunday it hosts a great food market where you can easily spend a few hours (and plenty of cash!).
