Shinjuku Botanical Garden was established in 1879 and became the place under the control of the Imperial Household Ministry (now the Imperial Household Agency), but after World War II it was opentothe public and is now popular as a national park under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Environment. In 2006, it marked the 100th anniversary of the name of Shinjuku Gyoen. As part of the 100th anniversary project, a conservation center for endangered plants is planned.
