Sightseeing
Curio Bay and the Petrified Forest is a great place to take in a bit of natural history and see the rarest penguins in the world - the Yellow eyed penguin. This is a 15 minute walk down the hill or 2 minute drive.

Great beaches and surf
A 35 minute drive to Papatowai takes in amazing rainforest and coastal scenery. There is a general store in the village and an awesome crazy cafe (the lost gypsy) which is well worth a stop.
‘Paps’ as it is know by locals has amazing surf and you can also rent kayaks from the village for use in the river and estuary heading into the sea.

Curioscape - cafe and interactive museum
Just down the road this very new cafe serves great food and has an incredible interactive museum/ display which will tell you all about the local area. Top of the list!

Groceries
Collect groceries before you leave to come here. The nearest shop for supplies is Tokanui (25 mins). The shop on the beach here at Curio Bay does sell the essentials but not all the time!

Prepare for 4 seasons
Wind can be ferocious at this southern tip of NZ. Bring plenty of layers. Like anywhere, if the sun comes out, this is heaven on Earth. There are a few sandflys around occasionally so thin long layers can be useful.
