The Cafe de l'Esplanade is a trendy and chic cafe that is open from breakfast until late evening and has a very mixed clientele, from politicians and celebrities, to locals and tourists. Visiting this Paris café, which is a full fledged restaurant with seating inside and outside on a terrace, you will find a quiet relaxing atmosphere in an unusual style, like going back to the days of Napoleon, yet being chic and modern all at the same time. The cafe has a fusion style Brasserie menu with exceedingly good quality food and is not like many of the cafes in Paris, as it serves everything from salads to sandwiches, American style breakfasts to soups, pasta, fish and traditional lunches as well.

The Petit Cler offers the atmosphere of a pure Parisian bistro, with its typical decor (molded ceiling, retro tiles, Brewery banquettes, specialty of the day painted on the mirrors). On their scrumptious, but reasonably priced menu, they offer today’s special at € 12.00, with tasty meat and fresh salads. The service is charming, fast and friendly. Something extra that has always seduced us, is that even at cocktail hour, they serve your wine in a beautiful and round digestive glass, a deli meat platter, accompanied with jar of pickles, and crispy toast . A must try during early spring evenings, on the patio, while dreaming in front of the colorful passing crowd in this small village.

Les Cocottes is family comfort food at its best, but with gastronomic flair that only Constant brings to the table. It reflects Constant’s roots – his mother’s cooking – with the culinary skills he developed at star restaurants such as Les Ambassadeurs at the storied Hotel de Crillon, Ledoyen (another Michelin three star restaurant), and The Ritz, which ultimately helped him become the genius Chef and restaurateur that he is today. Les Cocottes does not take reservations, which usually means you need to show up early (promptly when doors open), wait a while, or show up late (after 10:00 for dinner).

You are now on the corner of Rue du champ du Mars and Rue Cler. The Cafe du Marche' is one of the most popular cafes in the neighborhood, with a covered area outside where you can eat all year round. Get there early, as they do not take reservation; it becomes very crowded especially with the chic people of the quartier. There are a number of daily specials on blackboards, at reasonable prices. It's also a fun place to sit and people watch.

Toutain has worked with the best – Pierre Gagnaire, Alain Passard, Bernard Pacaud – and has certainly been an exemplary student. But what I love most about his approach and his daring is the way he translates nature’s treasures to the plate. We marvel at some of his combinations – kiwi and oysters or salsify and white chocolate – and applaud when something as down to earth as a tender, juicy pigeon breast is paired with perfectly cooked first-of-season asparagus (photo). And who could resist a pair of brilliant green parsley tortellini floating in a sublime pork consommé?

I loved chef Tomy Gousset’s cooking when he was at Pirouette, but this signature restaurant has just blown me away. The room is comfortable and a little plain, which is to say it fits nicely in the 7th arrondissement, but Gousset’s cuisine is thrillingly modern. He is a master of using herbs, acidity and texture to elevate sometimes humble ingredients like beef tongue or tête de veau. His compositions are intricate and colorful, making them a dream for Instagrammers, but flavor and balance are not sacrificed to beauty. Those who like to try different wines will love their list with a rotating cast of 20 selections by the glass. Service is on point and supports, rather than detracts from the

The menu at Petit Tonneau is concentrated around a few classics of French cooking. In Hors-d'œuvre for example, salmon, scrambled eggs with truffles, snails of Bourgogne, saute of wild mushrooms (depending on availability), œufs meurette (poached eggs with red wine sauce) or lentils with crayfish. Among the specialties, the veal chop and its juice is truly excellent. Many customers come just to savour its tenderness and its flavor. But there is also the rib steak with Roquefort ( a famous french blue cheese) and the veal kidneys in Madeira sauce, not to mention the veal stew (€ 18) another classic of the house. And the Chef also cooks with brio fish, such as codfish and sole.

Simple, affordable bistro with a friendly staff. Enjoy the poule au pot—their specialty, of course—which is like your grandmother’s chicken stew (if you had a French grandmother): chicken with potatoes, leeks, carrots and turnips in a light broth served with a terrific cornichon-caper-shallot sauce. You even get a candle and a tablecloth, all for a mere 30 euros. Pichets de vin (pitchers of house wine) are good and cheap.

A restaurant and truffle specialty shop, Truffes Folies is the palace for truffles. The restaurant incorporates truffles into its recipes, and the shelves of its gourmet shop are filled floor to ceiling with products showcasing this coveted mushroom. By tasting a truffle you take part in history: the Pharoahs enjoyed eating truffles, and the first truffle in France made its appearance on the plate of King Francis I.

Forced to flee their country following outbreaks of violence in 1915 and 1917 in their native Caucasia and throughout Russia, these two brothers succeeded in making caviar a coveted and luxurious food product in France. This long-running Basque address is an ongoing hit thanks to chef Stéphane Jégo. Excellent bread from baker Jean-Luc Poujauran is a perfect nibble when slathered with a tangy, herby fromage blanc - as are starters of sautéed baby squid on a bed of ratatouille. Tender veal shank comes de-boned with a lovely side of baby onions and broad beans with tiny cubes of ham, and house-salted cod is soaked, sautéed and doused with an elegant vinaigrette. There's a great wine list, and some lovely Brana eau de vie should you decide to linger.

Drinks & Nightlife

Following in the footsteps of recently opened bars successfully serving up both food and cocktails, like Candelaria or Grazie, the Club not only brings a bit of buzz to an otherwise quiet quartier but also injects a bit of fun into the Paris drinking scene, with accessible drinks and tasty club sandwiches. The atmosphere here is laid-back, lounging with a bit of nosh. Convivial owners Antoni Pascual and Stephane Bilard brought in hat creator Philippe Model to design the space, which resulted in an upper floor that’s quirky and amusing, with an interesting array of curios and a slick black Smeg fridge, and a lower floor that sinks drinkers into a “chaotic chic” environment, with distressed fa

Open market ----- This market is held every Thursday & Saturday on Avenue du Saxe, which is a street that aims directly at the Eiffel Tower, so as you head down the aisle you always have a view of the tower. It has the usual assortment of cheese vendors, vegetable stalls, bakery, charcuterie type things, olives, dried fruits, several butchers, rotisserie chicken & rabbit, plus a couple of antique vendors, rug merchants, chair repair and caning, flowers and an assortment of clothing, linens, etc. Not usually real busy if you get there before 10. Everything you need to put together a great dinner of pic-nik.
