Muda Blue's George Town Guide

City/town information

Putting notable monuments and attractions aside, George Town is a joy to explore on foot. Your eyes and brain will have something to feast on every step of the way, be it the unique architecture, heritage trades and local way of life. A list of what to see doesn't begin to do it justice as there are so much more in between which will strike one with awe.
A city in which DIVERSITY comes to mind instantly. In fact, George Town was listed, together with Melaka, as a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site for that very reason and more. Melaka and George Town, Malaysia, are remarkable examples of historic colonial towns on the Straits of Malacca that demonstrate a succession of historical and cultural influences arising from their former function as trading ports linking East and West. These are the most complete surviving historic city centres on the Straits of Malacca with a multi-cultural living heritage originating from the trade routes from Great Britain and Europe through the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and the Malay Archipelago to China. Both towns bear testimony to a living multi-cultural heritage and tradition of Asia, where the many religions and cultures met and coexisted. They reflect the coming together of cultural elements from the Malay Archipelago, India and China with those of Europe, to create a unique architecture, culture and townscape.

Our favourite local diners

Places where we ourselves dine at regularly which serve reasonably priced and delicious meals. We have included various cuisines as that is what we locals eat and we are spoiled for choice in George Town.
Not only because it's the closest to Muda Blue (literally just steps away) but because it serves delicious and affordable meals. Good for a full lunch or dinner or an in-between snack of fried noodles.

We love the soups here, namely the black herbal soup, watercress and old cucumber soup. The menu may be limited but they are enough for a full meal and we keep going back for those exact dishes - sweet and sour pork, bitter gourd with chicken, tofu with fish slices, sesame oil chicken and curry fish.

No-frills but authentic Nyonya food. Serves pork dishes. Good value for money too, especially their set lunches.

Although pricey, customers don't seem to mind as the variety and quality of food served here guarantee a satisfying meal, even for the locals. The must-have dishes are the caramelised fried roast pork and curry fish (either sting ray or pomfret).

Neighborhoods

Known amongst the locals as a more affluent neighbourhood, Pulau Tikus is also home to the Sleeping Buddha Temple and across the street from it, the Myanmar Buddhish Temple, which was built in the early 1800's. Some of their influences can be found in our food today. There are stalls in Pulau Tikus selling "Siamese Laksa", a version which uses coconut milk as opposed to the Penang Assam Laksa, which uses tamarind. Pulau Tikus is also where Gurney Drive is, along which two of Penang's best shopping malls are located. These are Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon where you can find international brands as well as local ones. Take a stroll down Bangkok Lane (towards Gurney Drive) to admire the unique architecture of the houses.
