A Favorite among locals for coffee and delicious vegan food, “The Bean” is also one of the city's most active music venues and has been featured in the New York Times. The shop also hosts weekly film screenings under the “Psychotronic Film Festival” group!

Drinks & Nightlife

American Legion Post 135 is truly a local bar and has one of the most diverse groups of bar-goers you'll ever likely encounter. With free pool, darts, and the cheapest drinks in town ($2 each!) it attracts all sorts of people. They also have amazing food via Betty Bombers!

A little off the way from most bars downtown, Abe's is home to quite a few people who knew about it “before it was cool.” It's laid back and artsy with a little dash of grunge and has a nice patio. Remember to bring a $5 bill to draw on and hang up at the bar!

Parks & Nature

One of our favorite places to watch a sunset, The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is a breathtakingly beautiful place just north of Savannah. While the Refuge is massive and includes parts of Georgia and South Carolina, there is also a four mile loop that can be driven by car. You'll see all sorts of wildlife including lots of alligators, great blue herons, and seasonal bird life. Spottings have also included bald eagles, bobcats, coyotes, gopher tortoises, and snakes! Look further in this guide for a mad of the trails and how to get there!

Shopping

Now in the old Primary Art Supply building (everything in Savannah used to be something else), Civvie's is a bad ass little used clothing shop with a smattering of other interesting things. The downstairs is even an antique store! Stop in and get on your high fashion at low prices.

The Book Lady is probably the nicest bookstore in the whole south east and a perfect place to stop for book lovers or anyone else. Specializing in used and antiquarian books it's nestled in a step down on Liberty St. and is as cozy and eclectic as you'd hope a used bookstore to be. Stop in and say hello to Joni (The Book Lady) and if you're a book lover, pick Rabo's brain too!

Right next to the Bean and in town long before that pesky Whole Foods, Brighter Day is the place locals shop for all organic and natural groceries as well as dietary supplements. They also have a delightful little deli in the back!

Everything Else

The Hostel in the Forest is a strange Hippie hold out in the middle of redneck country, but a great place to spend the night. Run since the seventies, the hostel is famous for its tree houses and its beautiful forests. Sitting on 133 acres of wilderness, there is also a beautiful lake wear guests are encouraged to swim (clothes optional), but watch out for the fishies! Book ahead of time as the hostel stays full and look for scheduled sweat lodges and meditation retreats too.
