If you are interested in geology and botany, 1048 South River Road is a fascinating approximately 7 acre place. It is a North Carolina State Heritage site. We are told that it is one of the most intact serpentine/olivine barrens in the county. The rock formations are thought to have formed roughly 300 million years ago and to have originated as oceanic crust and "incorporated in the suture zone between the African and North American plates during mountain building." Thus, the soil is not common on the earth's surface. As a result of the unusual soil, the land is home to several plants that are very rare including: Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepsis) and Prostrate Blue Violet (Viola walteri). Currently, there is another one being researched as a possible new/ previously unknown species. We regularly welcome students and faculty from Western Carolina University to the property to conduct studies and research.
