To the east of the city, just past the Old Steine is the vibrant area of Kemptown with a flamboyant mix of grand seafront crescents, elegant squares and a central shopping street with a village feel. This area of the city has some fantastic examples of Regency-inspired architecture and the remnants of the Art Deco movement along Marine Parade. Long associated with LGBT culture, lots of the city’s lesbian and gay pubs like the Queen’s Arms and The Marlborough are located here and it’s one of the city’s liveliest quarters. This area centres on lively St James’s Street, where rainbow flags adorn many of the bars, clubs and cafes. Classic vinyl, vintage fashion, and antiques draw shoppers to quirky boutiques. In recent years, there’s been an influx of foodie fare to accompany the plentiful drink – check out fashionable Vintage tea salon Metrodeco, Curry Leaf Cafe, Drakes Hotel for something more upmarket, and for coffee it has to be Red Roaster or Star Fish & Coffee.
