This picturesque National Trust Tarn is only a 15 minute drive from Graythwaite Estate. There's a gentle loop perfect for all abilities which can be extended by several other adjoining footpaths for those looking for a longer stretch. We'd recommend heading to The Little Ice Cream Shop in Hawkshead after or The Queens Head in Hawkshead for a well earned portion of chips!

Gummer's How is situated across from Graythwaite Estate on the eastern shores of Windermere. There is a car park on the right hand side of the road at the top of the hill. From here it's an easy 20 minute walk to the top where you can enjoy breathtaking views over Windermere, Graythwaite and on to the Langdale fells. For a longer walk carry on northward from the top. There's a lovely footpath that passes along the ridgeline before heading into the woodland and then looping back through the forest to bring you back to Gummer's How. After all the walking you can find us at the Mason's Arms at Strawberry bank. Pub views don't get better than the Masons. Especially in the rain. Grab a table with an umbrella and enjoy the free blankets and watching the world go by. Inside you will find the quintessential British pub; open fires, mucky pups, hearty food and a bar stocked with local ales and trendy gins.

Fell Walks

The Old Man of Coniston is one of our favourite local Wainwrights! From the top you can enjoy views across Coniston Water, Windermere and across the sea to Blackpool on a clear day! Outside of school hours we would recommend parking in the local primary school car park and walking up past the Sun Inn and towards the YHA before joining the fell path. For a shorter walk there is parking at Walna Scar. Summiting the Old Man is a well earned achievement, if it leaves you longing for more still there's a lovely loop either along to Wetherby and down or dropping to Levers Water. Finish up with a fish and chips or curry take away from town and enjoy it on the shores of Coniston Water.

A 40 minute drive from the Estate you will find the Langdales. Situated above the National Trust Stickle Barn is the picturesque Stickle Tarn. Enjoy a climb to the top alongside the waterfalls and grazing sheep. There are steps almost all of the way and so this can be walked by little legs as well as long ones! For a further walk add in Pavey Ark, Thunacar Knott, Pike of Stickle and/or Loft Crag.

The quintessential British pub. Wooden beams, open fires, soggy shoes and pups and a bar filled with real local ales. Don't even get us started on the hearty food and the beer garden views. You'll be hard pushed to find better! We'd recommend getting a variety of starters to share as there's always too many good ones to choose from. Earn your feast with a wander up Gummer's How first. Don't let the rain put you off, there's plenty of fires to dry off next to with a pie and a pint. Our absolute favourite local gem!

Chester's is a lovely vegan and vegetarian friendly cafe and gift shop. There are sit in and take away options. We'd recommend walking some of the Cumbria Way or the Langdales and finishing up at Chesters for a snack and peruse of the shop. Alternatively grab a take away snack from here to enjoy on the go!

The Drunken Duck is between Graythwaite and Ambleside and quite simply is just one of those places you 'have to visit'. The menu will tantalise your taste buds and offer a twist on the usual pub classics. If you're avid bike riders we'd recommend cycling here for lunch and taking in the views from the terrace.

A burst of colour, the Swan at Newby Bridge is a fantastic mix of bustling with bodies in the bar and delightfully private dining in the hidden booths. Both relaxed and fine dining available and dogs welcome in the pub! Sit outside by the river and enjoy a late summers evening or a crisp autumn afternoon.
