City/town information

The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Founded in 1209 and granted a royal charter by King Henry III in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's fourth-oldest surviving university. Modern Cambridge is a thriving city and no longer defined by 'town and gown'. The Science Parks have brought a lot of high tech industries to the city and there food and restaurant scene is thriving. Because of the domination of the University over city planning, the city has many fine original features and ancient buildings making it a very special place and a thriving community of young and old.

Histon and Impington are villages in the county of Cambridgeshire, England. They are situated just north of Cambridge. Over the years the two villages have grown and entwined together, to such an extent that many villagers today do not know where one ends and the other begins. They contain a combined total of six pubs. They have nursery, infants', junior and secondary schools. The International Whaling Commission is based in Impington, while the now-abolished East of England Development Agency was based in Histon. Histon is also the location of the radio station Heart 103 (formerly Q103), which covers Cambridge, Ely, Newmarket, Huntingdon and Royston and is part of Global Radio. Suggestions for meanings of this name include: "farmstead of the young warriors" or "landing place". However, the latter of these is unlikely as Histon is situated above the floodline. The likely origin of the name is from the two Saxon/Old English words hyse and tun – hyse meaning "a young man or warrior", and tun meaning "house or farm". The village name has survived relatively unchanged since the writing of the Domesday Book when it was recorded as Histone.

Great traditional English Pub. A beer house since 1836, the Red Lion continues to embrace its grain led origins, recently winning Cambridge CAMRA’s pub of the year award. Throw in a freshly cooked pub menu, four modern en-suite bedrooms, a cracking annual beer festival, pub teams galore (petanque, darts, crib) and a huge helping of community spirit and you’ll begin to see a little of what we’re about! Tucked away on the outskirts of Cambridge and proudly located in Histon, offers a great spot to drink, eat or stay regardless of the time of day or year.

Punting may be touristy.... But it is probably still the best way to see all of the colleges and their history up close. By punting up the backs you will pass through many colleges. Punting itself is not difficult. You stand at the back and push yourself along with the pole. The secret is that once you've pushed yourself along, you need to leave the pole in the water behind you to act as your rudder. Don't try to steer by pushing or with the emergency paddle... Punt like a pro and steer with the pole : )
