Activities

This beautiful 2.1 km self-guiding trail will immerse you in the sounds and sights of the forest. Learn about ancient Lake Agassiz as you enjoy the walk. You will see an expansive view of Lake Winnipeg at a resting spot along the trail. The trail is suitable for children as well as adults. Bring water and wear a hat to be comfortable in the sun. From Grand Marais, drive towards East Beach (six minute drive) and ask at the campground office how to locate the trailhead.

Sandspit Walk (between the marsh and the lake). At the end of Pinehurst Avenue, turn left and walk between the rocks that are at the beginning of the sandspit. On your left you will see the marsh, and on the right is the open water of Lake Winnipeg. Follow the trail. You can walk for 2 km along this shore and enjoy the sandpipers, seagulls, cormorants, eagles and pelicans. Asian Carp spawn in these shallow waters . I have seen a beaver swimming in the marsh, huge snapping turtles and deer live farther down in the forest. This is the place to go if you seek solitude and the sounds of the birds.
