The distillery is also the largest supplier of American private and distributor label rum. Cruzan Rum also makes a pure cane distillate alcohol (in 189-proof), which can be found for sale in the medicine sections of many grocery stores in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Cruzan is one of two rum distilleries which, due to their place in American history, are part of the American Whiskey Trail. Cruzan rum is made similar to a traditional Cuban style that produces an exceptionally clean, and lighter bodied rum. Although Cruzan rums generally have had mixed success at international spirit ratings competitions, the single-barrel has performed extremely well. Cruzan's most notable showing was from 2009 raters at the Beverage Testing Institute who gave it a 96 (out of 100). Proof66 rates the single-barrel amongst the Top 20 rums in the world.

Buck Island Reef National Monument, or just Buck Island is a small, uninhabited, 176 acre island about 1.5 miles north of the northeast coast of Saint Croix. The monument also includes 18,839 acres of submerged lands totaling 19,015 acres. It was first established as a protected area by the U.S. Government in 1948, with the intention of preserving “one of the finest marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea.” The U.S. National Monument was created in 1961 by John F. Kennedy and greatly expanded in 2001 by Bill Clinton, over the bitter opposition of local fishermen. Buck Island National Monument is one of few places in the Virgin Islands where brown pelicans and threatened least terns nest. Most of the Monument area, which is administered by the National Park Service, is underwater and attracts around 50,000 visitors a year. With its 4,554-acre (18.43 km2) long reef there is plenty to explore and experience in the water. Snorkelers can follow an underwater marked trail on the eastern tip. It is one of only three underwater trails in the United States. Along the trail are plaques denoting information about marine flora and fauna commonly found in the area. Two thirds of the island is surrounded by an elkhorn coral barrier reef, providing an ecosystem for over 250 fish species and a variety of other marine life including spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks and lemon sharks, and juvenile Blacktip reef sharks and Whitetip reef sharks. In the spring endangered Leatherback turtles come onto the beach to nest while Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles nest during the summer months. Turtle Beach on the western edge of the island features a pristine white sand beach and has been voted one of the world's most beautiful beaches by National Geographic.

Point Udall is located at the east end of St. Croix and is the easternmost point (by travel) of the United States including insular areas. It was named in 1969 for Stewart Udall, United States Secretary of the Interior under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. A sundial known as the Millennium Monument was built above Point Udall for the New Year's celebration in 2000 — it marks the azimuth of the first U.S. sunrise of that year. From the monument an informal trail of moderate difficulty leads down to the point, composed primarily of uplifted and rotated volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Upper Cretaceous origin. Point Udall also affords visitors panoramic views and marks the starting point of a hike that leads to the beach at Isaac Bay.

Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge preserves habitat for threatened and endangered species, with particular emphasis on the leatherback sea turtle. It's two miles (3 km) of sandy beaches on the southwest corner of Saint Croix is an ideal nesting place for leatherbacks. The National Wildlife Refuge is open to the public for limited hours on Saturdays and Sundays. The last scene of the 1994 film, The Shawshank Redemption, was filmed in the refuge.

The natural tide pools at Annaly Bay are a must-see of St. Croix. You can get to the tide pools and Annaly Bay beach by hiking through the jungle on the Trumbull Trail or driving in on the four-wheeling trail (which I haven’t tried yet). The hike is 2.7 miles long according to the sign at the trailhead, and it’s a little strenuous but well worth it.

Fort Christiansvaern is a Danish colonial fortification that commands the Christiansted harbor entrance to the north. The fort protected shipping from potential attacks by foreign invaders, privateers, and possibly pirates, enforced the collection of customs duties, housed prisoners, and quartered Danish troops primarily responsible for internal security on the island of St. Croix. The fort was built with the labor of enslaved Africans and conscripted Danish soldiers. Construction began in 1738 and was largely completed by 1749, with the last major additions dating 1835–1841. The original fabric of the fort remains largely unaltered. In the 1830s, a stable yard was added to the east of the fort and a walled prison yard to the west. It served as the focal point of the Danish presence and control on the island. Fort Christiansvaern is one of the best-preserved colonial forts in the Caribbean and is the largest structure at the historic site. Currently, the fort is the primary attraction within the park and features exhibits on the history of Christiansted and life on the island of St. Croix.

Fort Frederik is a mid-eighteenth century Danish masonry fort located at the north end of Frederiksted, on the western end of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands. It is also known as Fort Frederiksted and Frederiksfort. The Fort is located overlooking a deep water bay. Before the Dutch purchased St. Croix from the French, earlier colonists had established a small fortification at this location, The gun battery was used to deter privateers and pirates from using this place as a landing site from which they could travel inland and attack the settlements.

City/town information

The town was founded by Frederick Moth after he was made governor of St. Croix in 1733. Departing from St. Thomas, Capt. Moth's party had cleared a space for Fort Christianswærn by 5 September. In a ceremony next to this fort on 8 Jan. 1734, the French formally handed over the island to the Danes in the form of the Danish West India and Guinea Company. The island was to be allotted 300 plantations, 215 for sugar and the remainder for cotton. The plantations surveyed were 3000 feet by 2000 feet. In addition, the company established a sugar refinery and distillery. The fort was completed by 1740. The 1742 census listed 120 sugar plantations, 122 cotton plantations, and 1,906 slaves compared to about 300 Englishmen and 60 Danes. By 1743, the island had a hospital and in 1745, the number of slaves had increased to 2878. By 1754, the town included 83 "white inhabitants", "each of whom owned from a single slave to sixty-six of them," according to Westergaard. Total slaves on the island had increased to 7566. It is a former capital of the Danish West Indies and home to the Christiansted National Historic Site. Christiansted has preserved the 18th-century Danish-style buildings constructed by African slaves. Solid stone buildings in pastel colors with bright red tile roofs line the cobblestone sidewalks, adding a touch of 18th-century European architectural style. Because the town was constructed by African slaves, there are many African influences in Christiansted's design as well, making it one of the few "African-Danish" towns in the world. The town's symmetry, with streets running at right angles to the waterfront, makes it popular for walking tours. The commercial area centers on King and Company streets, adjacent to the Christiansted National Historic Site. The residential area, including portions that were originally settlements for free blacks, extends inland and uphill from the commercial area. The botanist Julius von Rohr started a botanic garden in the 18th century and produced a number of landscapes of the island. The town has small hotels and many restaurants. Several scuba shops operate in the town, as the wharf has easy access to many diving attractions on the north side of the island. A small point of interest is Protestant Cay, a cay near Christiansted.

Town of Frederiksted has fewer than 1,000 people in the town proper. Commerce is limited by its natural, shallow protective reef. Frederiksted was built in the leeward side of the island (shadow of the wind) for calm seas and a naturally deep port. It is home to Fort Frederik, constructed to protect the town from pirate raids and attacks from rival imperialist nations and named after Frederick V of Denmark, who purchased the Danish West Indies in 1754. Frederiksted is often referred to as "Freedom City" by locals. This nickname has to do with the fact that the town was the site of the emancipation of slaves in the then-Danish West Indies. On July 3, 1848, freed slave and skilled craftsman Moses Gottlieb, who also was known as "General Buddhoe," led the uprising, organized slaves on St. Croix's West End plantations, and marched on the town of Frederiksted. The emancipation of slaves was proclaimed on July 3, 1848, at Fort Frederik on the waterfront at the northern edge of Frederiksted by Governor-General Peter von Scholten. Frederiksted is home to one of two deep water ports on St. Croix and is the sole port for cruise ships visiting the island. Passengers disembark at the Frederiksted Pier, where they may explore the town, enjoy the beaches, rent a car, or catch a waiting taxi that will take them to other points of interest across St. Croix. The other deep water port is located at the South Port which includes the tank farm of the former Hovensa oil refinery as well as Renaissance Industrial Park. The territory's legislature is also located in Frederiksted. There are also several government offices that occupy historic buildings.

The Mill has exceptional harbor views, friendly service, and the best pizza on St. Croix! This open air, waterfront pizzeria is best described with these notes: open kitchen, local wood fired pizza, custom built brick oven, fresh dough made in-house daily, charred and chewy crust, and Cosa Nostra cheese. More than just pizza, The Mill offers gluten free ‘anti-pizza’ menu items, from Yellowfin tuna poke, kale salad, and rum cake ice cream sandwiches. Enjoy amazing sunsets, an eclectic mix of locals and visitors, and fast and friendly service. That pretty much sums it up! Walk-ins welcome. Takeout available.

Drink the Water?

In the main towns, the water is treated and is safe to drink. Most private residences utilize cisterns to store rain water or have water delivered by truck during drier months of the year. Unless you know the water is treated, bottled water is preferred for drinking. The water at most of the villas on the island is collected rain water that is stored in cisterns below the villas. It may be safe to drink, but we recommend buying bottled water for drinking purposes.

Is It Necessary to Conserve Water on the Island?

It is not absolutely necessary, however, please try to conserve water as much as possible. The water while in either in the towns of Christiansted or Frederiksted, is pretty safe to drink. The water at most places comes from rainfall collected from the roof and stored in a cistern under the structure (which is typical throughout the Caribbean), or is delivered by trucks. As you can imagine, this can be very expensive. Fresh water is very scarce on St. Croix. We recommend buying drinking water from a grocery store or the many convenience stores around the island.
