'the Brewery The Gyppo Ale Mill has an onsite ten barrel brewhouse and four ten barrel fermenters. Jared Smith, head brewer, is a one-man show that keeps our twelve taps rotating through an array of styles of beers as well as some staples, such as Mexican Lager and Beach Beer. New beers come on often so check back to see what Smith has up his sleeve! THE KITCHEN The Gyppo Ale Mill is a from scratch kitchen that utilizes the bounty of local ingredients surrounding us. Our fish comes from the Shelter Cove Fishing Fleet, supporting our local fisherman. Our vegetables are sourced from the Briceland Forest Farm. Briceland Forest farm is a small multi-generation market farm and homestead in the hills of Southern Humboldt County. This small farm has the goal of not only sustaining but improving and restoring the land they live and grow on through best practices. Something Gyppo can get behind 100%!

Shelter Cove is a great place to reconnect with nature, relax and renew your spirit. We enjoy the lack of city sounds, traffic, overcrowded malls, airplane traffic. A beach well worth exploring This is a large, mostly west-facing, black sand beach with offshore reefs just north of the town of Shelter Cove. Black Sands Beach is picturesque and relaxing. The black sand that covers the beach and has given the spot its name is very unusual. Directions: A 10 minute walk to the beach or a 1 minute drive from the Lazy Seal Lodge. Disabled parking is located immediately at the beach access point. The main parking lot has restrooms, a drinking fountain, and interpretive panels about the geology and other information about the area. PLEASE NOTE: For beach goers, prudent respect for the unpredictability of the ocean, as well as an awareness of current tide and surf conditions, is strongly advised.

This famed road, easily the most scenic drive among the redwoods, has been called the finest forest drive in the world. Lined by titan trees, the 31-mile Avenue parallels Highway 101 and offers an excellent alternate (and slower) route through southern Humboldt County. Mostly flat with gentle curves, it passes secluded forest hamlets, campgrounds, picnic areas, and access points to the Eel River, a federally-designated Wild & Scenic waterway with idyllic swimming, fishing and paddling spots. Numerous trailheads can be found along the Avenue, each leading into the magical redwood forest. Crescent-shaped Shelter Cove is reportedly where the first surfing in Humboldt County took place in the 1950s, and it remains the region’s most cherished surf spot. Surfers enjoy crowd-free coastline just about anywhere on the Redwood Coast, but the Lost Coast is particularly secluded. Deadman’s is the most popular shorebreak, particularly good during a south swell. Third Reef lies halfway between Deadman’s and No Pass, requiring a larger swell and low tide. Farther south is No Pass, a lefthander peeling along a horseshoe reef. Farther still you’ll find the rocky, righthand point break Gale Point, which requires a short paddle around Point No Pass and a walk down the beach. It may go without saying, but surfing Shelter Cove comes with some safety precautions, especially in winter. Study the tide, surf with a buddy familiar with the area, and make sure you’re wearing a thick 5 mil suit, necessary in the frigid North Coast water.

One of the most striking features of Humboldt County is the magnificent Eel River. The North and Middle Forks of the Eel have been designated as part of the National Wild and Scenic River system, and its watershed is the third largest in California. The river flows through five counties with winding lazy curves to churning whitewater. It runs parallel to the coast and Hwy 101. A large part of its run is through the Avenue of the Giants, making Hwy 101 and the Avenue two of the most scenic roads in Southern Humboldt. The South Fork of the river skirts the eastern edge of Humboldt Redwoods State Park. During the summer months, the river’s tributaries are slow-moving streams that provide a number of natural pools and safe swimming holes. There are many river access sites within the park. Dyerville Flats, located where the South Fork joins the main branch of the Eel River, features restrooms, picnic tables, an overlook and ample parking. Dyerville is located four miles north of the Visitor Center and very close to the turnout for Founders Grove, Rockefeller Grove and the intersection of Mattole Rd. The easiest river access to find from the Visitor Center is Gould Bar. A sign marks where the gravel road intersects Avenue of the Giants on the west, just tenths of a mile north of the center. A short drive takes you to two large swimming holes. You can also hike there from the Visitor Center’s parking lot or Burlington campground. High Rock is another access point that is easy to get to. Watch for the High Rock bar sign as you drive north on Avenue the Giants about six miles from the Visitor Center. A short drive down a gravel road takes you to a parking area. From there, it’s a short walk to the expansive bar that offers several ideal and placid sites.
