Sightseeing

I am fortunate enough to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and I am reminded of this each time I visit Banff and the surrounding areas. Picture-perfect scenery and rich history come together in the birthplace of Canada’s national parks system. Endless outdoor adventures are just waiting to be experienced in this mountain town. The slopes: Carve Champagne powder at three world-class ski resorts The history: Discover where it all began at the Cave & Basin National Historic Site, or pay a visit to the famous Castle in the Rockies. The great outdoors: There's year-round fun to be had. Explore hikes with unbeatable views, paddle a turquoise lake, watch for wildlife, or discover the magic of winter in the mountains. Hiking, skiing, watching wildlife are just a few of the things to do while visiting. Maybe you will be lucky enough to see a bear or a moose during your visit, then kick back for a great burger and one of their gourmet milkshakes at Eddie's in Banff.

With 85% of the world's population no longer able to see a true night sky, a visit to the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is a special treat. We are fortunate to be in one of the few remaining areas of the world that can boast about having true dark skies. I have been able to photograph both the Milky Way and Aurora Borealis around Southern Alberta, and this is a very cool spot where you can experience it as well.

If it weren’t such a cliché, we’d say Lake Louise is like a postcard you can step right into. OK, we'll say it anyway. In winter, the frozen lake is packed with Canadians ice skating in their natural habitat. The hamlet of Lake Louise has provisions for whatever your adventure. Viewpoint: In summer, hike to the famous tea house, about a two-hour trip upwards. Lake Louise will look like a big turquoise cocktail. Expect to get approximately one billion photo ops and a fierce appetite en route. Sleep tight: Go full-mountain by staying in a nearby historic lodge and eating local game meats and seasonal Alberta vegetables paired with Canadian wines.

There’s lots to see and even more to do, at the Calgary Zoo! Immerse yourself in the Land of Lemurs, or answer the call of the Canadian Wilds and behold the animals – from the glorious grizzly to the majestic moose – living right here in our own backyard. With a comprehensive daily activities schedule, no two visits are the same. Enjoy an abundance of expert-led programming from Caring for Gorillas to Animal Snackers, every day of the week! Fort Calgary is culturally and historically significant. It is located at Bow and Elbow Rivers' confluence, which is a part of a vast, dynamic and unfolding territory rooted in stories and lifeways of Blackfoot, Nakoda, Tsuu’tina, and Métis peoples. These distinct and diverse worldviews and communities have developed here over thousands of years and are still active today. Fort Calgary has a layered history. It has always been Niitawasi (Blackfoot Territory) and was a location for meetings, celebrations, ceremonies, hunting, harvesting, trade, and so much more. Because this place already held significance for Indigenous peoples, the Northwest Mounted Police built a fort here in 1875. When you visit the Fort Calgary museum, you will learn more about the histories of this place and the northwest Mounted Police's roles in bringing Canada to Niitawasi. We encourage all those who visit this place to learn and recognize this site's truthful and complex histories. It is a place to reconnect with the land, people, the past, and the present through the various experiences we offer: exhibits, public programs, venue rentals, education programs, and volunteering.
