Lunch or Dinner in downtown Brevard

Our favorite places to grab lunch or dinner in downtown Brevard
All around good, slightly upscale but casual restaurant in downtown Brevard. The Bavarian Soft Pretzel Board is our favorite appetizer, and their servers can usually recommend a great entree. They have Dog-friendly outside dining.

Nice restaurant in downtown Brevard. Indoor and outdoor (courtyard) seating, good sandwiches, fancy cocktail specials. They recently went to having a hybrid of counter service with some table service. It was a little awkward at first as we weren’t used to it, but you order your meal and drinks at the counter and seat yourself.

Jets is our go-to place for pizza delivery or carry out. You can call to order and then pick up 15 minutes later at college station in town, or have them deliver to Glade Creek Cabin. Delivery usually takes about an hour. They have thin, hand tossed or deep dish pizza, and a variety of salads. Their cauliflower crust veggie pizza is also delicious.

Orchards and Farms

Some of our favorite local seasonal spots for apples, berry picking, etc.
Jeter Mountain Farms orchard is lots of fun! It’s in a beautiful setting about 15 minutes from Glade Creek Cabin. Parking is easy, and there’s a large building and patio area with tables where you can learn what’s in season and available for picking. You pay for your baskets, and hop on one of the tractor/wagons that run every few minutes. There’s a berry patch, flower fields, and grape vines in addition to the apples. Catch the tractor back to the main area where you can enjoy delicious treats like apple cider slushees and apple donughts. There’s a wonderful gift shop to browse, and live music to enjoy as well. This is a great place for kids and adults alike- a perfect way to spend a few hours in the mountains.

Things to do in Pisgah National Forest

Educational, fun, and scenic historic spot. The USA’s first ever forestry school was right here in Pisgah Forest! See the old forestry school buildings and dormitory, hike to an old locomotive, and learn what life was like as a forestry student around the turn of the 20th century. There’s a visitors center with several interactive indoor exhibits like a wildlife scavenger hunt and a chopper you can climb in for a simulated forest fire-fighting experience. Check the website for info on tours and special program offerings.

Sliding Rock is a really fun summer activity. You go sliding down the wet rock face and then plunge into the icy cold water at the end. Wear your old tennis shoes or water sandals and go early or on a weekday to avoid massive crowds and long lines at the rock.

This is a great place just inside the forest on 276 where you can stop in to get tips or info on everything Pisgah. Rangers are there to answer questions and there are tons of brochures about local attractions, trails, and wildlife. Be sure to check out ‘The Last Dragon’ a fascinating short film about one of the strangest and most ancient species on Earth- the hellbender. Hellbenders are giant (3-4 ft long) elusive salamanders that live in Pisgah’s most pristine rivers and streams. There’s a gift shop where you can pick up maps, books and souvenirs.

AKA The ‘Fish Hatchery’, the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education has large outdoor holding areas where masses of trout wait to be released into the Davidson River. You can buy trout food from a gumball machine if you’d like to feed the trout. Things to do in and near DuPont, Hendersonville, and Flat Rock

Waterfalls, talking trees, a famous theater, and descendants of some of NCs most prestigious goats are just a few miles down Crab Creek Rd and into Henderson County.
This is a fun place for young kids especially. There’s a big stone picnic shelter, a little nature center, and a 1 mile easy loop trail with interactive talking trees along the way. Let your little one push the button to hear the Sourwood tree describe its characteristics and common uses before moving on to the Oak. Who will spot the next talking tree? Near the parking area there is an old chopper and some other large forestry equipment kids can see up close. For those wanting a more mindful or contemplative experience there’s also a meditation labyrinth, and a little stream perfect for skipping rocks.

Carl Sandburg, NC’s former poet laureate and Lincoln biographer, settled in Flat Rock with his family in the 1940’s. Tour the charming White House where Sandburg lived and wrote in the latter part of his life. Then walk through the beautiful grounds down to the barn where the descendants of Mrs. Sandburg’s prized Nubian goats are still raised and cared for almost 80 years later. The Sandburg home is right across the street from the Flatrock Playhouse, and has a picnic area by a stream near the parking.

Transylvania County is known as ‘The Land of Waterfalls’ or as locals like to joke: The land where water falls. That’s because we have the highest annual average precipitation of any county in NC, and one of the highest in the country. That’s why we have so much lush greenery, and also why we have so many spectacular waterfalls. Some of our favorite waterfalls are in DuPont State Forest. High Falls, and Triple Falls are my favorites. Bridal Veil and Hooker are also popular falls in DuPont. There’s a neat old covered bridge, and miles of really great hiking and mountain biking trails too. Bring your mountain bike or rent a bike and equipment from Sycamore Cycles. The parking lots and trails at DuPont get very crowded, especially during peak season. If visiting during a high tourism time we recommend visiting DuPont early in the morning or on a weekday when it’s less crowded.

This shoppe has souvenirs and all things white squirrel. Brevard’s town mascot is the white squirrel. Brevard has a large population of white squirrels, which have become revered and celebrated locally over the years. The story is a local woman was given a pair of white squirrels as a gift in the 1950s by the ringmaster of a circus that travelled through town. The squirrels escaped and mixed with the local squirrel population, and now have many descendants living in and around town. If you want to see a white squirrel in person drive down Probart St or check the grassy common area on the Brevard College campus as those tend to be white squirrel hot spots.
