Sightseeing

Richmond is a charming town about 24 km northeast of Hobart in the Coal River Valley wine region. It’s a perfect day trip from Hobart or an ideal stopover on your way to explore southern Tasmania, Freycinet, and the east coast. It’s a quick trip by car or you may take the regular bus service offered by Tassielink. Richmond is rich in history and architecture, with more than 50 historic buildings, mostly from the 1820s. This is a wonderful town to explore to learn about Tasmania’s past while enjoying visits to galleries, museums, cafes, and historical landmarks. It's also in the center of one of Australia's fastest-growing wine regions, the Coal River Valley, making it a terrific hub for foodies and wine aficionados alike. Richmond was an important convict station linking Hobart with Port Arthur, and Richmond is known for housing fascinating landmarks, including Australia's oldest intact jail (1825) and Australia's oldest remaining Catholic church, St. John's, built in 1836. Port Arthur is a village and historic site in southern Tasmania, Australia. Sitting on the Tasman Peninsula, it was a 19th-century penal settlement and is now an open-air museum. Ruins include the huge penitentiary and the remaining shell of the Convict Church, which was built by inmates. Solitary confinement cells in the Separate Prison building were used to inflict mental punishment in place of floggings.

Buy some fish and chips across the road from the beach, and watch the world go bye. Great playground for the kids.

David Walsh built the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) to house his collection of ancient, modern and contemporary art. Located on the banks of the Derwent a short ferry trip from Hobart, Mona is Australia’s largest private museum with three levels of underground galleries, which visitors explore with custom-built, handheld technology, called the O, that tells them about the artworks on display. Mona is David’s playground and experiment: we need art, he says, but for what? Mona is also home to two wineries and a brewery, several bars and restaurants, luxury accommodation pavilions, a library, cemetery and tennis court.
