Sightseeing

You can drive your car, bike or walk onto Horne’s Ferry in Cape Vincent, NY and get off a short trip later in beautiful Wolfe Island, Ontario. The island is full of farms and has a sweet downtown with restaurants and shops. Get a treat at the Wolfe Island bakery while you wait for your Ferry to take you onto Kingston, Ontario. Home to Queen’s University, Kingston has a vibrant and metropolitan downtown full of shopping, pubs and restaurants. Don’t forget the necessary paperwork to pass thru immigration into Canada. Insider tip: The rollers off Lake Ontario can be pretty big, so if you tend to get a little sea sick, choose a calm/not windy day to go!

Insider Tips

I am a native of Clayton. Here I offer tips on off the beaten path places that locals know about to avoid the crowds...
If you have access to a boat, Picnic Point on Grindstone Island is a great little getaway. Part of the New York State Parks system, locals go here to anchor in the bay and swim, fish and just relax. The dock isn’t in the best shape so you might not be able to tie up and go on Grindstone. But it is worth it for some peace and quiet. Great pike fishing. Docks located on the opposite side of the pavilion are reserved for local fishing guides who tie up and cook shore dinners here for their customers. So please don’t use the reserved docks.

Summer in Clayton

Summer in Clayton can be very busy. The streets are very narrow so be prepared to go slow. If you are staying in the village it is always easier to leave your car behind and walk.
不容錯過

Take a stroll on the new River Walk to Washington Island.

This easy stroll along the Clayton River Walk to Franklin Street is perfect when you want to get away from the crowds. It eventually crosses the causeway onto Washington Island. Walk or bike along the causeway and see some turtles or maybe a water snake. Swans and ducks like to hang out in the bay near the bridge.

Wonderful Day Camps for Kiddos

The Thousand Islands Art Center in the village of Clayton is not to be missed if traveling with little ones. They offer day classes and camps that give both parents and kids a break. When my son was young he went to pirate camp, learned about architecture and pottery at their classes. Get the class schedule in advance for sign ups. Very reasonable rates.

Rookie Boaters Beware of Shoals

If you aren’t familiar with the St. Lawrence River and plan to rent a boat you need to be very careful when navigating the river. Shoals - rocks just below the surface of the water - are dangerous. They can not only ruin your boat’s prop and your day but can cause serious injury.
