Local places of interest

If you wish to move away from the house and lakes, then the following places are worth visiting.
Lovely, scenic walks. Variety of routes and 8 counties visible on a clear day. The mountain is well mapped. Church ruins and mass rock just some of the features. Why not stop off at Frank's Bar at the foot of Sliabh Bán on your way down from the mountain. This is a grand old-style bar inside with a spacious outside play-area for children to the rear. You will be well looked after by Laura and staff.

Starting point to over 200 archaeological monuments/forts. Otherworld soutterrain Oweynagat should be top of the list. And then there's Queen Méabh and Ireland's last pagan king, Dathí.

Home to Packenham-Mahon landlords for centuries. In an ironic twist of fate it now houses the National Famine Museum. Worth a visit to the house/grounds, even though the museum itself is closed until spring of 2022.
