Award-winning winery near Tweed
If you are looking for a wine tasting experience or winery tour, you don't need to go as far as Prince Edward County. It won two gold medals and a silver in International Du Vin competition in Bordeaux, France’s oldest and largest wine contest (see Toronto Star article). The grounds are beautiful as well. Stoco Lake is accessible via Kayaks (over an hour away of paddling) and is known as a popular fishing destination for monster muskie, though you are more likely to hook a walleye, black crappie, small-mouth or large-mouth bass. A good concrete public boat launch is located off of River Street at the Community Memorial Park in Tweed.

Pack your picnic, grab the provided Ontario Parks Pass and venture to the amazing hiking trails, cliffs and beaches of Bon Echo Provincial Park (50 min drive from cottage). No surprise that the landscape and vistas fascinated the artists of the Group of Seven! A 100 metre high Mazinaw Rock is featuring over 260 Indigenous pictographs. You can rent a canoe at the Lagoon to paddle on Mazinaw Lake and view up close these pictographs. Cliff Top Trail is only accessible by water. Stairs and a pathway take hikers to the top of Mazinaw Rock to three observation decks overlooking the lake. During summer, "Friends of Bon Echo Park" offers a boat tour and ferry service to help you explore the park to the fullest (check schedule and fees online). Additionally, three natural sand beaches, Main Beach, South Beach, and North Beach, provide excellent swimming spots.

One of my favourite spots to hike and connect with nature, in any season, within 20 minutes drive. The north side features several forested trails along the Moira River, around a silver maple swamp, through a mature hardwood forest, and to the beautiful Cedar Creek lookout. The south side of the area contains more trails, including the popular Wetland Ecology Boardwalk. Included in the Quite Region pass.

Inexperienced hikers may find the trail challenging. Depending on skill level, it may take up to 6 hours to complete the loop. Proper footwear should always been worn. Only 30 mintutes drive from the cottage, via Shannonville. A trip through Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory is a delight in the summer, as its highways move along rolling green hills, flanked by lush green spaces. Visit stores on Highway 49 & Highway 2 where you can find arts and gifts that pay homage to First Nations culture, many offering original artwork, handmade crafts, and jewellery made by local artists. The oldest gift shop here is Native Renaissance. Here you’ll find the works of new and established Indigenous artists, beaded moccasins, along with handcrafted earrings, necklaces, and bracelets made using Indigenous techniques. Visitors will also find an extensive selection of books for both adults and children, as well as Mohawk language learning guides and postcards designed by Indigenous artists. A smaller shop, Soaring Eagle, carries genuine Native arts and crafts made out of quality materials, such as deerskin, glass and semi-precious beads, real fur and feathers. Rebecca Maracle’s Gallery & Gifts, located at 840 Highway 49, has become a destination for visitors who come for the handmade gifts and her distinctive feather art, ranging from framed feather-work to leather medicine bags and jewellery. Millside Ceramics owner, Marleen Murphy, creates pieces using traditional Mohawk colours and images. No surprise that her work was chosen to represent Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Requires appointment. Down a quiet country road (52 S Church St, Tyendinaga) sits a structure of great historical significance that is also unique to the area: Christ Church, Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal of the Mohawk. Events: Tyendinaga Pow Wow where every summer hundreds of dancers, in traditional First Nations costumes, dance to the sound of deep voices and the beating of drums. The Mohawk Fair which is held annually towards the end of the summer and attracts thousands of people to the fairground along Old York Road.

L’ Auberge de France serves coffee & lunch Wednesday to Saturday 10am-5pm. Order online fresh croissants and bread made by hand every Saturday morning. Their fresh sandwiches and soups are so yummy, and the Parisian pastries are to die for! The Fine Gourmet Shop features imported cheese, charcuterie, epicerie, an excellent selection of French wines as well as classic take out/frozen French classic meals (cooked by a Michelin star experienced chef -- pssst, a local secret). Capers restaurant near by serves food created from scratch with fresh local ingredients, great wine and the regions best selection of craft beer on-tap. With a comfortable atmosphere, Capers is a great spot for lunch, dinner or just cocktails . Folk, blues, and acoustic bands every Saturday night. Paulo’s Italian Trattoria offers so much more than pizzas: penne arrabiata, fettuccine di mare, tortellini, funghi, calamari, bruschetta, as well as fine quality black Angus strip, lamb, chicken and fish from the grill. The Boathouse Seafood restaurant, located on Belleville's beautiful Victoria Harbour, has a great waterfront patio (perfect for summer!) & a boat dock. Belleville's favourite spot for seafood, it won Best Seafood Restaurant in Ontario in 2019. Local producers set up stalls at Market Square for the Farmers Market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays year round (8am to 5pm). Located behind Belleville's City Hall. With fascinating history, Glanmore National Historic Site is an impressive Victorian mansion that displays beautiful original furnishings, hand-painted ceilings, ornate woodwork and historical artifacts.

Just a little north of Stirling, this water buffalo farm is a definite “must stop” when exploring the area. It offers a free, self-guided tour that is very both educational and fun. You can even pet the baby buffaloes. Workers are very helpful and can give you some insights. The Buff Stuff Store offers a wide variety of grass-fed, hormone and antibiotic-free dairy and meat produce. Check out the freezer: the sausages and the croquettes, the meat pies and tarts are to die for. Oh, did I mention the gelato? De-licious. So tasty and creamy! Handcrafted soaps made with natural ingredients and unique fragrances, or horn-made bangles and bracelets can be very nice souvenirs. 346 Stirling Marmora Road - Stirling

If you are on your way to cute little town of Stirling, you might want to stop by Hasting Meat Market -- a great place to buy meats that come from local farmers. Try the traditional farmer’s style sausages like smoked, honey garlic, maple, Italian or bratwurst; the delicious lean-meat jerky (a perfect, snack for on the road or at home), the natural wood smoked bacon that is cured using the traditional dry-rub, the hot-smoked pork chops, or the yummy beef burgers or salami.

As a historic house museum, Glanmore has undergone extensive site restoration to accurately exhibit what the house would have looked like when the wealthy banker J.P.C Phillips family lived at Glanmore in the 1880s. The grand interiors, including beautiful hand-painted ceilings and ornate woodwork, complement the exterior architecture. The Regional Collection features artifacts reflecting the history of the Belleville region from about 1780 to the present.

Plan to set aside a few hours to truly enjoy this aviation gem located in the Quinte area. Over 35 aircraft on-site provide guests with an up close and personal “flying machine” experience, the crowning glory being the fully restored, Second World War, Halifax bomber. Over 75,000 square feet of display space attached to a sprawling 16-acre air park. While the museum is a self-guided attraction, if you are in luck, a past or current serving military member of Canadian Air Force would be happy to share their stories with visitors of all ages. Recommended to anyone interested in history or aerospace engineering.
