My go-to restaurant is Tazza Kitchen at the Village. They craft new cocktails every month and then I love anything from the brick oven. That's within walking distance from the house. https://www.tazzakitchen.com/location/cameronvillage/

Raleigh has a large Lebanese community and I have heard that they feel this is truly authentic Lebanese dining. My favorite here is the chicken artichoke, but you can't go wrong with the sampler platter. This is great for lunch or dinner when you have other plans downtown. https://www.sitti-raleigh.com/

This is the flagship restaurant from the James Beard Award winner Ashley Christensen. My first introduction to her delights was at the diner counter with a plate of heirloom tomatoes on sweet cornbread and burrata - looking much like strawberry shortcake - but so much richer. You can't go wrong with the macaroni au gratin. The menu changes weekly, so it's always fresh and new. If you are looking for conversation, try to go when they open, because it can get loud in there - but the food is worth it. https://ac-restaurants.com/pooles/

An easy walk for simple, authentic Italian food. I enjoy the marsala or the wedding soup, but I see most locals head there for the pizza. I understand this is what the owner, a Sicilian, does on Friday nights - toss pizza dough in the air..... https://piccolaitalianc.com/

Another option within walking distance for southwest TexMex or Mexican. It's great to sit with chips and salsa and a Margarita. There is dining inside and outside, upstairs and downstairs. The front of the restaurant faces east, so it is a great place for happy hour or dining in the shade in the summer. https://www.18restaurantgroup.com/cantina-18-raleigh

Towards the NC State Belltower, you can't go wrong with the handmade fried or steamed dumplings at David's. The chef David Mao has been on the food scene since 1972 and he is still the one in the kitchen making the dumplings. If that's not your pick, there are other asian favors from Malaysia and Vietnam. Realize this is authentic and take care when asking for more spice! https://www.ddandnb.com/

The Pit is an upscale BBQ joint that allows you to truly try a number of different styles of BBQ. Whether is it is Wester NC pulled pork with a ketchup based sauce (my fav), or the Eastern NC chopped pork with a vinegar based sauce, you will have the chance to weigh in on your favorite. If that's not your fancy, look for the ribs, the chicken or the catfish. Too hard to choose - then see the combo platters. Whatever you do, realize there will be a doggie bag to take home. A special treat - ask for the table at the kitchen to watch everything being made and get a chance to talk with the head chef. Just to be sure - call ahead and see if you can reserve it. https://www.thepit-raleigh.com/

Coffee and Tea

My favorite local coffee shop where it is great to just hang out with an Earl Grey Tea Latte. If that's not you fav, there are always new flavors of coffee, mochas and teas available. If you have some time there are books and games as well. The only drawback is the parking, but when staying at Ever at Home, you only have to walk 2 blocks. https://www.globalvillagecoffee.com/ BTW - Global Village is under Mitch's Tavern that was one of the filming sites for Bull Durham.

Part coffee shop, part art gallery, part eclectic living room. I always love the feel when I sink down into the antique velvet green chair with a chai tea latte. I've heard the bullet coffee is also amazing. Parking is easy, so what are you waiting for? http://www.luckytreeraleigh.com/

This is the mecca for tea lovers. There are easily a couple hundred different kinds of tea - particularly when you start blending flavors. If that is not enough, then there is the honey bar. You will find your favorite and need their address to order more. Get ready....

The Raleigh Rose Garden is just two door west on Everett. This was the second site of the NC State Fair and was dedicated as a rose garden in 1950. It is a site of many a wedding and photo shoot. A great spot to stop and smell the roses.... https://raleighlittletheatre.org/visit-us/rose-garden/

There is a lot one can see and do at NC State, but one great spot to just hang out is the Court of North Carolina. It is the largest green space on campus and spans basically from the Belltower to the 1911 Building. Consider taking your tea or coffee from Global Village, or even lunch from David's Dumplings and make a picnic. Since the pandemic, the university has worked to create more outdoor meeting spaces, so you will readily find Adirondack chairs scattered around the perimeter. https://visit.ncsu.edu/court-of-north-carolina/

Dorothea Dix Park is an amazing public space in downtown Raleigh. The 308 acres was the site of the Spring Hill Plantation for 150 years and then the Dorothea Dix Mental Hospital for another 160. The rolling hills allow for great views of the city skyline, and the chance to explore hidden gems like the field of sunflowers in the spring. Grab something amazing from Boulted Bread, or a picnic lunch from the Farmer's Market and head over to Dix to claim a spot to just be. https://dorotheadixpark.org/

For some time out in the woods, consider the Umstead State Park. There are a number of trails at various difficulties from a 0.4 mil easy loop to a 13 mile moderate hike. Make sure you get a peek at the chainsaw art in a fallen 25 ft oak tree near the Multi-Use Trailhead off Sycamore Rd. If that's not your game, you can rent a canoe at the visitor's center, check out the cycling trails, fishing for bass, bluegill or crappie in the lakes, or bring set up a picnic using one of their grills. https://www.ncparks.gov/william-b-umstead-state-park/home

Breakfast and Brunch

Whether you are from the South or not, this is truly an experience. Open for breakfast and lunch - you will find the typical country breakfast fare, but from local farm to table sources that were used decades before farm to table was a thing. The recipes are also what one's great grandparents likely had. And then there is the decor. One could spend hours checking out everything and still find one particular item to ask about. My favorite is always the country ham and a couple of eggs over easy. You can still have breakfast all day - but they also have the country meat and three menu... https://www.bigedsnc.com/home-index

Remember how cool you thought the food court at the mall was when you were a teenager... Pull that feeling back out and try this spin for more mature tastes. Hang out with friends or get some work done in the middle of a historic coach warehouse. The seafood is fresh and the empanadas are amazing. ttps://www.transfercofoodhall.com/

They call it a lifestyle dining concept where you can order from different local vendors for a taste of Raleigh. It's a great place to sample and share to find out what you need more of. The other twist are events in the common areas. I've taken a painting class from a pop up studio while sipping on a orange dreamsicle cocktail. There easily is something for everyone. https://www.morganfoodhall.com/

By far my favorite pizza. The menu is full of amazing combinations, but my go-to is the chicken cordon bleu or the pesky chicken. In the summer, it's a great treat to get the Cool Summer pie, where the pizza is cold with hummus is the sauce and it's topped with a mediterranean salad.... Whatever you decide, this will take care of a pizza craving! This is take out only, so consider how this will fit into an adventure at Dix Park, or at the Rose Garden. https://capitalcreations.com/

Sweets

One of the first small batch bean-to-bar chocolates and confections made on site in the US. These are some of the smoothest chocolates that I've ever had - and highly recommend taking these in small bites and savoring the taste and feeling. The beans are hand chosen from the owner's trip overseas - that started with Escazu, Costa Rica. The chocolate is made in a 300 year old machine from Spain. Just walk-in an take in a deep breath to be immersed in the aroma. My favorite confections are the raspberry preserves, backed up by the Strawberry Balsamic. Then come the caramels and dulce de leche. Check out the rotating adult favors including liquor or wine. https://escazuchocolates.com/

I have a thing for handmade bread and sweets. One of my favorite places is Boulted Bread in downtown Raleigh, where one can be immersed in the magic and shed the stress of the outside world.
