Cotswolds Driving Tours

The Cotswolds’ landscape is beautiful; full of romantic honey-coloured buildings, old traveller’s pubs, village ponds and the bustling market squares. The rich and diverse history of the Cotswolds is perfectly captured within the many towns that encompass this region. You have Stow-on-the-Wold, which dates back to Roman times, and parts of Gloucester that herald from the Anglo-Saxon era. There really is something for everyone in the Cotswolds. So whether you prefer the busy town centre of regency Cheltenham, the village atmosphere of Bourton-on-the-Water, or the peace and quiet of Woodstock, check out our driving roads to help you get the best out of touring the Cotswolds. Painswick & Laurie Lee Countryside Painswick is a small Gloucestershire village and a great starting point to travel around the Cotswolds. Taking the A46 from Painswick, you can travel up the valley where you have great views of Cheltenham and Gloucester. Alternatively, head south towards Stroud and enjoy spectacular views, as you get closer to the royal residence of Gatcombe Park. There are many smaller country roads leading off from the A46 that will take you to the tiny villages such as Slad, Edge and Bisley, offering traditional pubs and great shops. Slad (and The Woolpack pub) is especially noteworthy given its link to Laurie Lee and the famous book “Cider With Rosie”. The local pub serves very good food and on a clear day, the views are simply stunning.

Broadway & the Northern Cotswolds Taking the A44 from Broadway and heading up to Evesham, you can then drive back down towards Tewkesbury via the A46. You’ll pass beautiful stately homes, historical churches and charming Cotswold villages such as Bishop’s Cleeve, Woodmancote and the Saxon borough of Winchcombe. Situated at the foot of Cleeve’s Hill, you can stop and take in the breath-taking views of Cheltenham and Gloucester. Carry on back to Broadway or you can divert across to Northleach, from there you can travel down to Cirencester and the Cerneys, renowned for their water parks. Unlike “The Golden Triangle”, this area is perhaps a little less known. The villages are still very typical of the Cotswolds, offering some stunning charm with some of the most untouched architecture. Villages such as Stanton (be sure to check out The Mount pub), Paxford, Buckland Laverhill and Snowshill are such examples.

Cheltenham, Winchcombe & the Western Cotswolds Cheltenham is another ideal starting point for your tour around the Cotswolds. Located on the western fringes of the Cotswold Hills, you can take the A40 towards Charlton’s Kings towards Andoversford. Here you’ll pass wonderful landscapes that include forests, wooded areas and reservoirs. Carry on through to Shipton and then take the A436 to Crickley Hill Country Park, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Cotswolds Hills. You can divert off this track and explore the many villages and towns above this road, such as Leckhampton and Shurdington, or carry on through to Brickhampton, ending back at Cheltenham town centre. An alternative route would be to head north towards Winchcombe on the B4632. Just as you enter Winchcombe, take the turning towards Charlton Abbots, which will eventually bring you to the A40. Turn off at any time and you will head deeper into the Cotswolds Hills – and who knows what you will find.

City/town information

15 miles from the house If you only had 36 hours in Cirencester, what could you do? On arrival 7pm Glory in Cotswold stone architecture on a short walk through the centre: stroll along Market Place and Park Street, then turn right down Sheep Street and right again along Castle Street, noting the Lloyds Bank building, a Palladian mansion built for a wealthy wool merchant. Stop at the Black Horse opposite. Dating from the 15th century, it’s the oldest pub in town. 8.30pm Head back to Market Place and the 1862 Corn Hall, refurbished as a chic mall in 2009. Here Made by Bob (01285 641818; foodmadebybob.com) has put Cirencester on the foodie map. Masterminded by Bob Parkinson, who trained at Bibendum in South Kensington, London, this relaxed deli and brasserie prides itself on first-rate ingredients – the likes of pan-fried sea trout with samphire (£18). Open for breakfast, lunch and teas, Monday to Saturday; dinners, Thursday and Friday. Day one 10am Cirencester’s Roman amphitheatre (english-heritage.co.uk; open all day; free) is a large grassy bowl west of the A419 (on foot, the best route is via Sheep Street and Cotswold Avenue). Built in the second century, it was an enormous show space, with capacity for 8,000 spectators. 11am The Corinium Museum (Park Street; 01285 655611; coriniummuseum.org – Cirencester’s Roman name was Corinium Dobunnorum) is a treasure trove of history. The collection of Roman mosaics is jaw-dropping. Download further Roman details from the museum’s new Romans app, £2.49. Lunch on salads and freshly baked cake at Jacks (01285 640888), the great little café next door. 1.30pm Tiny Black Jack Street beyond is brilliant for browsing. Stop at the Stableyard, home to appealing boutiques, from Cameo for accessories to Cowley House for one-off homeware. Then meander to Castle Street and the vibrant Brewery Arts Centre, showcasing craftmakers and with a glassmaking studio at work (daily, except Sunday). Move on to the Corn Hall for further stylish retail. 3.30pm West of the centre, wonderfully landscaped Cirencester Park (cirencesterpark.co.uk), home to the Earl of Bathurst, is another unique attribute (daily, 8am-5pm; free). 8pm Tucked away in the Stableyard off Black Jack Street, Jesse’s Bistro (01285 641497; jessesbistro.co.uk) is much loved for its looks (all beams and exposed stone) and modern British cuisine, such as rack of lamb with aubergine purée and chickpeas (£22.50). Day two 11am See one of the finest “wool” churches in the Cotswolds. The parish church of St John the Baptist is renowned for the Gothic flourishes in its south porch and fan vaulting – funded by wool merchants whose crests adorn the pillars (Sunday Eucharist is at 10am). Noon Behind the church lie the Abbey Grounds, once home to an Augustinian monastery, demolished in 1539. Take a walk here and into the countryside beyond, via a trail through a Norman archway (the only remaining building of the abbey) and across the A417 to Harebushes Wood. There’s a circular route of about 45 minutes, returning beside the A429 Burford road. Then head out to Abbey Home Farm (01285 640441; theorganicfarmshop.co.uk) about two miles east, and enjoy lunch at its organic restaurant (closed Mondays; roasts on Sundays) – or walk here from Harebushes Wood.

Stow-on-the-Wold https://www.stowonthewold.info/ Stow-on-the-Wold is Cotswold’s highest town and while you may not be able to stand on it ‘hill top’-style, you are able to have a deserving break in one of the abundant cafes in the market square and immerse yourself in the town and it’s history. It was here that the last fight of the English Civil War happened in 1646 and there are many references to this throughout the square in the centre.

https://sudeleycastle.co.uk/ Want romance? Sudeley Castle & Gardens is one of the most romantic castles in the Cotswolds and, indeed, the whole of the country. This beautiful castle and surrounding gardens has played an important role in England’s history for over 1,000 years. The centrepiece of the gardens is the Queens Garden, so named because four of England’s queens – Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I – once walked upon the original Tudor Parterre. Sudeley Castle & Gardens is also the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds – Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives.

Cheltenham Combine with an outing to Bourton-on-the-Water Upper and Lower Slaughter share a fascinating name, which derives from 'miry place'. The link is the tiny River Eye, tributary to the nearby river Windrush. Lower Slaughter is just off the Fosse Way and very conservation-minded, a wander alongside the stream seems like a privilege. People actually live here! The villages are considered to be one of the prettiest in the area and are well photographed and the village has been used for filming and productions. Lower Slaughter Mill & café is worth a visit. A mill is recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086 on the site of The Old Mill. In the 14th Century it had begun to be known as Slaughter Mill and is open to the public to view today. Upper Slaughter is equally as attractive - a 'sainted village' meaning that it lost nobody in the First World War. There is limited parking in the Slaughters, but they are easily reached on foot via a nice walk from Bourton-on-the-Water.

A country fair with a rock ‘n’ roll twist; a farmers’ market with a dance floor; a local carnival with a classic contemporary soundtrack.
