Saltburn is a few miles north of Staithes and has a number of attractions to make for a great day out, the most obvious being the incredible beach (which up until the 1940s was used for motorbike and car racing) and the Victorian pier with water powered funicular lift. The long beach here goes all the way to the mouth of the Tees so plenty of space for dog walks or finding your own quiet spot. Why not have a surf lesson with the local surf school? The Valley Gardens are an excellent place for exploration with some wonderful waymarked walks in the woods. The main part of the town is at the top of the S bank. Here you will find cafe's, bars and restaurants as well as the train station and local shops.

Emergency Services centre

The Lifeboat station in the village is located over the footbridge on "North Side" or Cowbar. The RNLI station was founded in Staithes in 1873 and an all weather boat was installed in the village. There were multiple periods of closure due to a decline in fishing and lack of crew but in 1978 a new inshore boat was installed and the station has run successfully since then. The station has a wealth of information about the boat used, the history of the RNLI and the rescues that Staithes lifeboat has been involved in. A few buildings further along from the station is the RNLI shop where you can make donations and buy RNLI themed gifts.
