Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center interprets the area’s colorful lumbering past. The 14-foot Lumberman’s Monument stands on a high bank with the Au Sable River providing a scenic backdrop.
Learn about the industry that helped develop northern Michigan and the men who cut the timber that helped build a nation. Climb through a log jam, use a peavey, cut a wooden cookie with a cross-cut saw, and learn about the life of a lumberjack through video and displays. Hike the stairway down to the wanigan, a loggers floating kitchen, or take the short trail to the dune observation deck.

A great place to view a large herd of elk and get up close to them for great photos.
The City of Gaylord maintains an elk herd and provides viewing areas for the public to stop and watch the impressive herd. Under the city's care the roughly 70 elk can be viewed from near the Elk's Lodge off Grandview at Elk View Park.
The herd is contained on 108 acres. City staff feed the animals corn, hay and sugar beets, plus vitamins. The herd started with three elk 14 years ago, when a local nature center closed.
Currently, a few of the bulls weigh well over 800 pounds and stand roughly 6' tall. The bulls will don their massive horns during the fall and winter, dropping them in the spring.

Bull Gap Hill Climb is the only designated motorized area on the Huron-Manistee National Forests open to cross-country travel. The sand hill is 0.2 mile and at a 35 - 40% grade.
Bull Gap is open to all vehicles with a valid DNR ORV trail sticker. If you chose to use hill climb in a vehicle 50” wide or less, you are required to use the 50” return trail to return to the bottom of the hill. Users in motor vehicles greater than 50” are required to use the full-size motorized vehicle return route.

We love maple - it is one of the highlights of the year for us. The time that we spend as a family preparing the woods, gathering the sap, boiling it down to syrup, and chatting with each of our gracious and devoted customers is very enjoyable. Truly, making maple syrup and its products is just a glorified hobby to us, a chance to enjoy life while making a quality product and meeting new friends.
Of all the different things we do in our part of beautiful northern Michigan, making maple syrup is the most memorable. As I'm sure you know, there is nothing like walking into our sugarhouse. The aroma of boiling maple syrup could hardly be called an attack on your sense of smell - it is more like the delightful fulfillment of a craving. The sugary scent soothingly lures you inside to find out what we make and how we make it.
You then get a quick tour that may leave you with more questions than answers, and are finally brought to our display of jugs and fancy glass bottles from which you may choose your syrup. If you happen to chance by on certain rare occasions, we may even give you a taste of the really fresh stuff. And what a taste it is! Unmatched by even Aunt Jemima's processed plagarization, its combination of warmth and delicate sweetness cannot be equaled with mere words. There are just some things that cannot be explained, they must be experienced. Unfortunately, you had to continue in your way through life as we all do, so you got your maple supply for the year with a bag of cookies for the road and perhaps one or two gifts for the relatives, and said your "goodbyes" with a promise to be back again next year. This relationship with you is the reason that we stay in the maple business.
