Arts & Culture

I felt compelled to visit and we were absolutely delighted we chose to do so. The building is unassuming but step inside and I felt transported to a different world. There were bikes everywhere, of every description and vintage. The ether smelled of bikes. My memory was taken back to my childhood and cycling in the hills with my pals on their Raleigh Choppers. Over 3000 bicycles crammed into every nook and cranny. I felt the passion of the person who had amassed this wonderful collection. What a place, what fun, what nostalgia.

The gardens were founded in 1893 by steel and real-estate magnate Henry Phipps as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh. Its purpose is to educate and entertain the people of Pittsburgh with formal gardens (Roman, English, etc.) and various species of exotic plants (palm trees, succulents, bonsai, orchids, etc.). Currently, the facilities house elaborate gardens within the fourteen room conservatory itself and on the adjoining grounds. In addition to its primary flora exhibits, the sophisticated glass and metalwork of the Lord & Burnham conservatory offers an interesting example of Victorian greenhouse architecture.

The Cathedral of Learning, a Pittsburgh landmark listed in the National Register of Historic Places,is the centerpiece of the University of Pittsburgh's main campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Standing at 535 feet (163 m),the 42-story Late Gothic Revival Cathedral is the tallest educational building in the Western hemisphere and the second tallest university building (fourth tallest educationally-purposed building) in the world. It is also the second tallest gothic-styled building in the world. The Cathedral of Learning was commissioned in 1921 and ground was broken in 1926. The first class was held in the building in 1931

The Nationality Rooms are located within the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. The Cathedral itself is a beautiful sight and the Nationality Rooms are a great feature. There are two options to see the Nationality Rooms- one was free and the other floor of rooms cost a small amount of money. We chose the free version and saw about 20 different rooms. The rooms are designed as a snapshot in history of different cultures around the world. They feature local craftsmanship, artifacts, and artwork from that time period. Make sure you flip a switch when you go into each room, a narrator will describe the room in detail. The one floor took us about an hour.

In a word, this museum was great, far exceeding my expectations. It was great for kids to learn about the region’s high impact on history. I have a newfound appreciation for Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania on a whole. Whether the museum cited historical figures like Carnegie or Dr. Salk, highlighted impact on history such as the Pennsylvania company that built the first Willy’s Jeeps, to having fun with kids’ hands on activities, this museum is a one stop shop. If you are passing through or staying in Pittsburgh, you will come out enriched after a few hours here. The place is laid out over six stories with new displays with interesting information. The Slavery to Freedom exhibit was fantastic!

I found the University of Pittsburgh to be a delight to wander around. It shows off a variety of styles, including Beaux-Arts, Greek Revival, Italian Renaissance and Modern. The masterpiece here, however, remains the 42-story Late Gothic Revival Cathedral of Learning. After staring at the exterior of the beautifully cleaned, 1931 steel-frame, Indiana-limestone high rise, I went inside for about 90 minutes. The massive 4-story Gothic Commons Room captured my attention as did the few Nationality Rooms that I could enter because no lectures were under way in them during my visit. Thirty of these rooms are located on the first and third floors with each designed to show off a culture

Located on the North Side amongst a complex of museums (Childrens', Mattress) and performing venues the facility offers patrons of all ages the opportunity to see a variety of habitats, watch feedings, have the birds sweep and swoop around you in the rainforest, see penguins from above and below and for an extra charge view a show based in the Amazon where birds and a special appearance by a sloth entertain while the makeup, complexity and necessity of the Amazon rain forest was explained.

A local artist Randy transformed the exterior of the house and the inner courtyard into an eclectic compilation of his work. He used a lot of vibrant colors and items recovered from the neighborhood as part of his art. Randy lives inside the house and comes out to paint or socialize with his visitors. Visiting was free but he has a small souvenir shack which looked to be on an honor system. Do not miss this free, outstanding work of street art and folk art

A visit to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is essential for families visiting Pittsburgh with children ages 6 and under. The exhibits prioritize action and learning by doing, plus are extremely fun. Compared to other Children's Museums that I've been to, I find that this museum has an emphasis on makerspaces and engineering, plus the arts. The rotating exhibits are always great, on this visit we saw the Mo Williams exhibit which was top notch. We also love the art area and always come home with fantastic pieces that the kids have made

It is amazing! Added bonus was their military discount it was 50% off the day we went. The layout is great so even though it was really busy it didn't seem like it because there is so much room and things spread out. So much to do here, you almost need more than a day to do it all. Fun sports themed area with a lot of activities for kids to run off some steam. Train display had to be the highlight. One of the latest in the world and is a Pittsburgh gem with incredibly detailed.

The museum has plenty of exhibits to see and learn more about Andy Warhol. I thought it was interesting to see the works of art from the different periods of his life. If you are going to go here I would suggest comfortable shoes because you will be walking on concrete floors. Great museum with a wonderful story and collection of Andy Warhol art and history. The collection is spread over a few fllors and covers all of his life

This was a beautiful way to spend a Sunday. I had made reservations to take the tour of the main house. Our docent was very nice. We had about 8 total on our tour of the house. What a beautiful look at how the wealthy lived back in the day. After the house tour you are free to walk the grounds. On the grounds is a beautiful green house that you can go in and walk around. There is a car museum that you can go through and the cars are just beautiful. I can't imagine life back then but it looked pretty awesome. There is a wonderful gift shop that you actually start in.

Schneley Park is a great place to walk around! There are great jogging and walking trails that are both paved and unpaved. If you prefer trail runs, this is a great place. Strollers are easy to use at Schenley Park. There are trails, a golf course, tennis courts, many other amenities. It wanders from Squirrel Hill to Oakland showing a lot of what makes the "Burgh' a great neighborhood city with a lot of green space. They hold classic car races and other events throughout the park. Enjoy!!!

Legend has it that when steel baron Henry Clay Frick's daughter turned 16, he asked her what she wanted for her birthday. She replied that she would like a park where she and her friends could play. Frick purchased hundreds of acres of wooded land adjacent to his mansion on Penn Avenue. When he died he donated 106 acres of his acquisition to the City of Pittsburgh. Over time the City acquired adjoining land and opened Frick Park in 1927. Today the park covers 644 acres, stretching from Point Breeze to the Monongahela River. The park has at least two large playgrounds, ball fields, picnic areas, a delightful café which serves lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch and High Tea. I can tell you more!!!!!

I love coming here in the all four seasons!Being located at the very tip of the three rivers, Point State Park offers great views of Pittsburgh's downtown, stadiums and Mt Washington. It has such a wonderful view at the confluence of the 2 rivers. The fountain is spectacular. If you can get the right angle with the sun the spray creates a wonderful rainbow. Obviously the best time is when it's sunny. If your riding around town on a bike for fun, this is a must place to stop and smell the roses. The surrounding gardens are just as nice.

Here is another hidden gem and one of the most magnificent views of the city bar none. Located at the sharp turn at Baily Avenue (right, it's nowhere near Grandview Ave) it's one of those places you could totally miss if you didn't know it was there. Lot of activities here, yoga classes, movies in the park, and more. Lots of benches for relaxing Seems to be a park a lot of people bring their dogs for walking The view of downtown, it's buildings, the rivers, and even Oakland is one of the best in town. Parking can be hard, as it's street parking. Best to walk to the park.

When approaching Highland Park from North Highland Avenue you're greeted by the entry garden and fountain, which reminds me of something you'd likely see in Europe. The Victorian-style entrance with well-maintained gardens draws you in and from there you forget that you're only a few miles from downtown. Walk a bit further and you'll begin to see all that the park has to offer. You'll find that the park boasts a couple playgrounds, some swimming pools, athletic courts, trails - both flat and hilly, paths along the reservoir and more. So, get out and explore!

I love coming here for Bach Beethoven and Brunch. Try to get there early 9am if you want to be in the front near the orchestra or meander around the back and find a shady spot under a huge tree with your picnic. Always bring a big soft blanket so you can lay down. Mellon Park also hosts " A Fair in the Park " you will find music, fine arts, food, and fun! You can buy some great plants at the Phipps garden center adjacent to this Sunday event.

From the riverfront path (good for walking, jogging, biking, strollers, etc.) to the close proximity to both Heinz Field and PNC Park to the water steps for kids, this beautiful park is a gem of downtown Pittsburgh! Oh how I enjoy strolling through here. Even when it's crowded there's still a sense of peace mixed with excitement.
