LDI is a must! This is said to be the best seafood in the area, has the best views, and even better is a stone's throw away from the house! It's a perfect spot for fresh seafood, or just a quick ice cream cone. Eat it there and enjoy the views or take it back to the house for an easy evening meal.

Only a 15 minute drive, this place does not disappoint. An idyllic location with water views and lots of charm. There's fresh baked good and hot coffee always. This is a great spot for breakfast or lunch. They even have frozen meals for dinner that you can take home and enjoy. The kitchen is an all-woman team and everyone is such a delight! I would not miss this.

A way to see part of Acadia National Park & avoid the crowds! Because this special island is only accessible by ferry boat from Stonington, it does not get nearly as many visitors as mainland Acadia per season. Taking the ferry over (on an old mail boat) makes this a special trip and provides amazing hikes and views without the crowds! This is for sure a gem.

Just an hour's drive - a day trip that is well worth it! The food, views, and culture are amazing. Take the day to explore and shop around bar harbor, then retreat away from all of the hustle and bustle back to our oasis in Deer Isle. Bar Harbor gets busy in the summer!

This is a 98 acre preserve that is made up of Fir and Spruce trees. The ground was covered with fern, moss and lichens. It makes it a unique place to take a walk. The trail is short, only 1/4 mile but it connected with other trail systems on the island.

Things To Do

The original opera house was built in 1886 during the granite boom but burned down in 1910 (ironically, on the first night the town’s fire hydrants were operational). It was rebuilt in 1912 and over the years served as a home for theater performances, basketball games, film showings, rollerskating, and the town hall. However, with changing technology and a fluctuating town population, the building eventually fell into disrepair as it sat unused for years in the 90s (apart from a family of raccoons who declared it “home”). Thankfully, the building had been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the nonprofit Opera House Arts purchased it in 1999 with a vision for a new future.

A local jam and jelly shop with a sculpture village made of found objects. Or is it a living history museum? A place where the Old West meets the Mississippi Delta meets Maine island life? Even Peter and Anne aren’t sure how to describe it—only a visit can show you the magic of this peculiar roadside stop.

Looking for a rainy day activity, something to do in Deer Isle-Stonington with kids, or just curious about conservation and the fishing industry? This interactive education center in Stonington packs several interactive exhibits into its small space. The Discovery Wharf is run by Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries, an organization that’s doing excellent research and work with a mission to secure a sustainable future for fisheries and fishing communities. Instead of keeping fishermen, scientists, and regulators all working in their own silos, MCCF works with fishermen through a collaborative approach to utilize the wealth of knowledge they hold. Their approach is one of both stewarding the ocean’s resources and protecting livelihoods that depend on them.

This is a preserve that has a pond a short hike out from the parking area. This is a local swimming hole and is filled with fresh water. In Maine, the ocean doesn’t get warm enough for recreational swimming to be common, even in the summer. Instead, people will go to the Lily Pond to enjoy the water.

Definitely one of the cooler beaches in Maine. You should plan to go on the out going tide, as there is very little beach at high tide. There are also several other "secret" beaches that are only exposed around low tide. Lots of rocks to climb and places to explore which makes it great for kids.

VISIT DURING THE SHOULDER SEASON

Not only is it a more pleasant experience for visitors when things are less crowded, it also helps spread the tourism dollars out for local businesses. The only downside to visiting during late spring or early fall is that some businesses and events only run during the peak summer travel season so you will want to check in on that.

DISCONNECT

Disconnecting from social media and technology is a great way to really connect with nature and the people you interact with. While you will find Wi-Fi in many places, why not take the opportunity to unplug?

PACK OUT ALL TRASH (AND PICK UP ANY EXTRA) IF YOU VISIT SURR

Even if there are residents on an island, like Isle au Haut, it’s best to not put stress on island infrastructure. And picking up extra trash is just being a good steward. Those adorable marine animals you spotted on the ferry ride will thank you!
