Midland

While exploring the town of Midland, you are naturally drawn to the waterfront, where you will find a lively downtown with cute shops, delicious restaurants, a waterfront recreational trail, and the largest outdoor historical mural in North America! Midland is a beautiful city! In fact, it made its way into the top 100 as one of Canada’s best communities in which to live, according to a recent survey. Around the centre of Midland there are a number of murals, most of which were painted by now deceased artist Fred Lenz. Stop by the waterfront information centre and get your map for a self-guided tour of the MIDLAND MURALS. Scattered about the downtown core of Midland, you will discover 32 murals illustrating significant characters and time-periods of the town. Some are easier to find than others-challenge yourself to find them all, and don’t forget to tag @heartofgbay in your photos along the way. An annual Butter tart festival is held in early June. The day after the Butter tart festival is the Butter Tart Trot, a 5-km fun run for older people and a 2.5-km run for children under 5 years old.

Between February and April, when days begin to get warmer but it’s still below z e r o degrees at night, maple trees absorb water from the soil they grow in. During the day, warmer temperatures create pressure in the tree, which pushes that water back down the trunk. By piercing a hole in the trunk, that maple water can be interrupted and collected, boiled down, and we get maple syrup! Head to Windlee Farms Maple Syrup to learn about the process, and maybe sample a drop or two of their award-winning maple syrup. Don’t forget to bring a bottle home for your friends and family.
