Neighborhoods

(The photo is autogenerated and NOT Indian Village - sorry.) This is a beautiful historic district of Detroit where the first top managers of the auto industry made their homes. If you're interested in residential architecture, I highly recommend a stroll here (focus on one or several of these streets: Seminole, Iroquois and Burns, especially between the cross streets of Jefferson and Kercheval).

If you take a right on Jefferson Avenue coming from Marlborough Street and keep going for about 15 minutes, you will reach the beautiful Lakeshore Road. On your left you'll see some impressive Grosse Pointe mansions, but in my view, the true attraction is what's just 10 meters to your right and extends all the way to Canada: Lake St. Clair. Driving so close along the shore of the lake is a very special feeling and sight. You can make a U-turn at numerous spots, of continue until you reach the Ford Mansion (see: Edsel & Eleanor Ford House), for example. There, you'd stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens to see the lake again.

urban nature

This park is less than a 5-minute walk away from your home-away-from home. I love it because except on summer weekends when people congregate with family and friends for BBQ and picnics, it's quiet and serene. At the pier, you can strike up a conversation with an angler, or you might meet a neighbor walking their dog, or you can just watch the seagulls, the freighters, fishing and sailing boats. To the West, you can see Belle Isle and, on the horizon, the Detroit skyline (and the setting sun). To the East, you can see where Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River meet. And right across the water (looking South!) is Canada.

DetroitAbloom.com (see for photos and details) is a serene oasis created by a neighbor of Jefferson Chalmers and the many friends and volunteers who have gathered here. If you wish "to smell the roses" - this is a great place for it. They also offer various workshops (yoga, cooking, flower arrangements), musical events, etc. And brand new: there is a children's play area. Regulars also rent their own plots for urban farming. It's a great place to be outside and meet people.

As the crow flies (or if you dare to skate across the ice of the Detroit River in the winter, theoretically!) it's only 3 miles away from your home-away- from-home. The drive takes about 20 minutes and even just driving over the bridge which connects the city to this island will be worth it. You can stroll at the Western tip (looking at the RenCen) or take a nature hike on the Eastern tip (looking toward Jefferson Chalmers), and in the summer enjoy swimming spots. The main beach faces the city, is very clean and the shoreline is sandy, not muddy! :-) Other points of interest here are the historic Aquarium and Conservatory, and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum (cool architecture, great exhibit)

Food Scene

This is one of the few places I've discovered in the US where you can enjoy food and drink right by a park and a body of water (Fox Creek, which flows into the Detroit River). Great food (farm to table), drink, staff and guests.

my favorite little grocery store, less than a 10 minute drive away in Grosse Pointe ) is the Sprout House. The best freshly made Southwestern Avocado sandwiches, imho! (Also popular: Tofu Sandwich).

For a quick breakfast on the road to work, our local trusted provider is Yellow Light on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Marlborough. They offer Southern Biscuits, a large variety of donuts, and excellent coffee.

This cool place, recently opened on the corner of Jefferson and Lakewood in a cool building which reminds me of the 50s to 70s, serves farm-to-table Southern culture food, dine in or take out. Give it a try!

Sightseeing

If you're interested in ships and the Great Lakes, this is a must-see. (Personally, I also recommend it for the surprising contrasts between the city and this very different world of big ships and water)

This aquarium, built by the famous architects George Mason and Albert Kahn, operated continually for 100 years until 2005. Since it reopened in 2012, it has been run entirely by volunteers. The aquarium, covered (inside) entirely by greenish tile, is intended to give visitors an underwater feeling. It's truly historic and unique.

This museum amazes visitors again and again. Detroiters, however, have always loved it - and it loved them back, so-to-speak: the art housed in the DIA played a critical role in the revival of Detroit after the city's bankruptcy in 2013.

周邊交通資訊

Driving and biking are the best

There are busses serving Jefferson Chalmers, and the nearest stop is on Lakewood Avenue, just a 5 minute walk away. However, it takes at least twice as long to get to downtown Detroit by bus than by car. We can only hope that public transportation will receive more support one fine day.
