This beautiful wilderness wedding venue was created after my fiancé and I couldn’t find a venue we loved that catered for all our needs but on a budget, we could afford. I wanted to get married in a woodland, he wanted to arrive by helicopter, and we wanted a fun, festival vibe with food trucks and glamping. After countless disappointing trips to other venues, we were up at his family’s farm one day and realised what we were after had been under our noses all along!" And so the Waterfall Farm woodland venue was born. The beautiful woodland park area is an absolutely enchanting location for your ceremony. Saying your vows under the willows and oaks is just magical. And, with enough rustic log benches seating in the ceremony area for 80, your guests will be cool and comfortable throughout the ceremony under the dappled shade of the trees. Our beautiful clear marquee adorned with festoon lights is yours for the day to create the reception of your dreams complete with our 120 vintage school chairs and 20 trestle tables. Then you can call in the food trucks you love to cater the event, then party the night away under the stars on the rustic timber dance floor. You can also hire our resident Caravan Bar "Walter" or arrange for your own. Making Dreams Come True! Waterfall Farm is 18 minutes up the Kaipara Coast Highway from The Stables Cottage.

THE HUNT IS OVER. We love a good story. The Hunting Lodge site is rich in history and the stories live on through generations. Home of New Zealand's original Sauvignon Blanc vines and once a real hunting lodge for the Kerr-Taylor family, this site has seen it's fair share of change over the years. It's most recent chapter revives The Hunting Lodge's culinary past. With the Restaurant sitting at the beating heart of the site, our working winery is home to everything good - Food, wine, friends and family. Also a great Lawn bar with food as well as a Barn for Weddings & Events venue. Cheers to that! The Hunting Lodge is 10 minutes from The Stables Cottage

Settlers Country Manor is a very beautiful historic building; it was originally built as a dairy factory by the pioneers of the area back in the early 1900s. Producing mainly butter, it was the heart and soul of a thriving farming community until the late 1950s. The building has been home to many things in its life, from a storage facility for old World War II planes to an Art & Craft shop. Purchased privately by the Jack family in 1972, the building has been slowly restored and developed into a warm and gracious old dame of a building. With 7 acres of magnificent, mature grounds and lovely flowing waterways. Although it has changed since its days as an old butter factory it still retains its original peaceful feel with arch bridges and beautiful flowering gardens, perfect for many photo opportunities. With over 100 years of history, breath-taking view and charming vintage interiors, Settlers Country Manor provides a magnificent setting for weddings, events and à la carte restaurant dining in Auckland, all year round. Settlers Country Manor is 10 minutes from The Stables Cottage.

Little Wilderness is one of the newest wedding venues in Kumeu, a family run venue that provides an eco-ethical option for your wedding. Looking out to 30 acres of regenerating native bush and orchards, there’s plenty of spots for your ceremony, photos and reception - quite simply this place is a photographer’s playground. They provide far more than a DIY event experience with dedicated catering space, accessible bathrooms, chairs + tables and vintage furniture galore. The modern shed space is full of industrial character and serves as a neutral backdrop that requires minimal decoration. As they are not a winery nor a restaurant, you can bring BYO alcohol, food trucks or your favourite caterers at no extra cost. Little Wilderness is a 22 minute drive from The Stables C.ottage.

The Riverhead has been a house of refreshment and conviviality for around 160 years. In that time it has seen many events and stories come and go, countryfolk and townspeople, fishermen and farmers, smugglers and clergymen, marauding riders of the night through to social visits from the local constabulary. All have played their part in giving The Riverhead a rich stable of stories befitting the oldest riverside tavern in New Zealand. Today, this rich tradition of hospitality continues and we invite you to come in and make your own stories. Connected to an airy outside deck surrounded by 100-year old oak trees, The Landing Restaurant provides a fantastic relaxed dining setting. This is premium pub fare with a sophisticated edge, served with the down-to-earth charm of a true rural establishment. Our talented chefs insist on using only the freshest, premium quality, local and regional ingredients. These creations are matched with a handpicked cellar of fine wine & a wide range of refreshing premium & craft ales. Whether you’re settling down for a romantic meal, catching up with friends or treating the family, The Landing is a place you’ll love, and love to return to.

Boric Food Market has been a local favourite for decades. The multi-generational Boric family orchard has evolved from a roadside fruit stall to what is is today. In 2012, third generation brothers Franco and Stefan Boric along with their wives Nada and Verity-Jane, created the concept of ‘Boric Food Market’. This evolved by expanding the sheds to house a vibrant speciality food market and deli, home grown produce along with meats, cheeses, breads, wines and a vast gourmet selection of pantry staples. They also do great coffee, counter food, a lovely outdoor area to relax overlooking their orchards with an interactive children’s play area.

In Huapai is the flavorful Hapunan, only 15 minutes from the Cottage, this takeaway only joint is well worth a visit. They started life with a food truck and now have this venue as well. Aldrin and Laura are Hapunan. Filipino Cuisine holds a unique place in both their hearts and they knew that taking the risk would help with giving a bit of spotlight to a cuisine that is so rich in culture and diversity.

A windswept rugged coastline stretching 60km north showcases Muriwai's spectacular black sand surf beaches. At its southern end, Otakamiro Point is the site of one of our few mainland gannet (takapu) breeding colonies. About 1,200 pairs of gannets nest here from August to March each year. The nests are just centimetres apart. It's an air traffic controller's nightmare, but somehow the birds have it under control.

BAY OF ISLANDS You can’t go past the beautiful Bay of Islands on the northern East Coast of NZ and approx. a 3 hour drive north of Auckland, here you can take a boat cruise around the many islands, view dolphins, dive, fish or just relax in the sun. There is also the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, one of New Zealand's most significant historic sites in Paihia. The Bay of Islands encompasses 144 islands between Cape Brett and the Purerua Peninsula and includes the boutique towns of Opua, Paihia, Russell and Kerikeri. There is a choice of tour operators mainly operating out of Paihia who offer excellent trips by sea to the spectacular Cape Brett and the ‘Hole in the Rock’ on Piercy Island. A passenger ferry service runs between Paihia and Russell, while a vehicle ferry provides a link between Opua and Russell. Russell is a charming town and a perfect base for exploring the Bay of Islands. I spent many summer holidays at Russell – its quaint, bustling in summer yet still has a charm of yester year, it holds an important place in New Zealand's history, being the country's first seaport, its first European settlement and New Zealand's first capital in nearby Okiato. The town's streets retain their original layout and names from 1843, and many of its historic buildings can still be visited today. New Zealand's first licensed hotel, bar and restaurant, The Duke of Marlborough is located on the waterfront of Russell and it’s a great place to sit and have a spot of lunch, a drink and watch the boats come in and out. The Bay of Islands has a vast range of activities including scenic heli-flights, boat cruises, walking tracks, kayaks, paddle boarding, and sailing. Tapeka Point – is just north of Russell and is a maritime adventure playground with an abundance of wildlife including penguins, dolphins, marlin, whales, gannets and more. Many of the islands here have walking tracks and there is a camping ground on Urupukapuka Island which can be got to by passenger ferry. A hiking option is to do the Urupukupuka Island Archaeological Walk – it’s the perfect place to soak in stunning views of the Bay of Islands as well as learn about the fascinating pre-European history of the island. It’s a five-hour island walk. This track generally follows the outer edge of the island passing various archaeological features and doesn’t take a full day but enough to give you a good hike as well as a little history and take in the amazing coastal scenery and finish off a day of exploring on the gorgeous beach that is perfect for relaxing or snorkelling. However, do your research as there are many wonderful walks in Northland and around the Bay of Islands if you’re a keen hiker. FAR NORTH AND CENTRAL/WEST COAST Venturing further north where the Tasman Sea meets the mighty Pacific Ocean is Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of New Zealand, a must-see when in New Zealand. Near the tip of Cape Reinga are the Te Paki Sand Dunes, the largest of their kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s a good climb to the top but if you have a boogie board, it is a challenge, it’s made all worth it with the adrenaline rush of surfing down them via boogie board. Not far is Ninety Mile Beach, a seemingly never-ending stretch of sand stretching along the western tip of the North Island. Officially a highway, the best way to explore the beach is by guided Coach tour from Kaitaia or Paihia – it’s a memorable day out and stunning scenery to boot. Heading across to the West Coast, we have the wonderful Hokianga Harbour, 2 of the most popular and quaint little towns are Opononi and its twin settlement Omapere, which provide a slice of beachside living in the heart of the Hokianga Harbour. Opononi was made famous in the mid 1950s by the tame dolphin Opo, who used to let children ride on his back. A white sand beach stretches all the way to the Opononi Wharf, where you can catch a water taxi to the giant sand dunes on the other side of the harbour. Dune surfing on boogie boards is a thrill that leaves you sandy but extremely satisfied. Other options are kayaks or jetski’s. Further south and heading back down the west coast, you will discover a beautiful Kauri forest, of all New Zealand’s kauri forests, none is more famous than Waipoua Forest, just north of Dargaville. As the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland, Waipoua is an ancient green world of towering trees and rare birds. The highway through the forest is memorable for the natural gateways created by huge kauri trees and the fringing of colourful ferns along the road's edge. This forest is the home of Tāne Mahuta, the country's largest kauri tree, which is approximately 2,000 years old and still growing. Nearly 18 metres to the first branch and 4.4 metres in diameter, Tāne Mahuta is rightly called 'The Lord of the Forest'. Another significant tree in Waipoua Forest is Te Matua Ngahere – 'Father of the Forest' – which is estimated to be between 2,500 and 3,000 years old. There are tracks and walks through all these regions – and worth doing further googling if you’d like to take in some of these.

WARKWORTH/MATAKANA/TAWHARANUI Only an hour north of The Stables Cottage and close to a myriad of stunning east coast beaches, Matakana is a popular getaway spot for locals and visitors alike. Matakana is foodie heaven - if you enjoy home-grown delicacies and award-winning wine then look no further. Enjoy a wine tastings at one of the numerous wineries in the region, especially famous for producing delicious chardonnay, pinot gris and classic red varieties of Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah. You'll soon pass through the rural area of Matakana, the picturesque Matakana region is a foodie's heaven known for its weekend farmers market, boutique food shops and spectacular vineyards, as well as the Brick Bay Sculpture trail & restaurant and the Sculpterium - well worth a stop if you have the time. The road continues through farmland and ends with a winding gravel section. Once a large private farm, the Tawharanui Regional Park covers the end of a peninsula that extends into the Pacific Ocean just north of Kawau Island. The long, sandy beach on the northern side is considered to be one of the best swimming and surfing venues in the north Auckland region. There are grassed areas above the beach furnished with shady pohutukawa trees - a picnic paradise. An ecology trail starts at the far end of the beach, beyond a protected breeding area of very rare New Zealand dotterel birds. The trail passes along a rounded-stone beach before climbing up across farmland to a valley of beautiful native forest. Points of interest are marked along the way and copies of the trail guide are available from the hut at Anchor Bay. There are several longer walking trails in the area, including one to panoramic views from high on the end of the peninsula. Tawharanui Regional Park is about 80 minutes drive north of Auckland – so you could even do this as a day trip from our Cottage.

THE COROMANDEL The first being the The Coromandel, on the East Coast of NZ, its mountainous, forested interior dotted with walking tracks means there's something for everyone. Its a binocular’s view across the gulf from Auckland, The Coromandel is everything that a big city isn’t. With a mountainous interior cloaked in native rainforest and more than 400 kilometres of dazzling white sand beaches, it is rustic, unspoiled and relaxed. Activities and attractions are plentiful, from fishing and diving to hiking and cycling. You might choose skydiving in Whitianga or a guided sea kayak tour around the coast. If you’re lovers of white sand beaches and secret coves, The Coromandel is paradise. I’d head to Cathedral Cove where a naturally-formed archway divides two small, perfect bays, there are not many places in the world where a cathedral-like tunnel separates two secluded white sand beaches. You can explore it from a kayak tour or a boat cruise or walk in through the track. Look out for seals, dolphins and colourful fish in crystal-clear water at the nearby marine reserve or visit the impressive Big Bay Blowhole, near Hahei. Also you can dig a hole at nearby Hot Water Beach and bathe in naturally heated mineral water that bubbles up from deep within the earth. Or, if you’re a keen surfer, head to Pauanui or Whangamata – both towns have beaches known for their consistent swell. As well as stunning beaches, there’s a myriad of walking tracks on offer in this region. The most popular is The Pinnacles, a 2-day walk that takes hikers up to one of the highest peaks in the Coromandel Forest Park for spectacular views or something a little less taxing is the Coromandel Coastal Walkway, which is a day walk that winds its way along the coast and traverses bush, farmland and coastline; this takes 7 hours (return) and lets you soak in the full beauty and solitude of the remote upper Coromandel Peninsula. Stony Bay and Fletchers Bay mark the start and endpoints of the track, and both are hidden jewels in their own right. Also walks in the Wentworth Valley showcase a beautiful waterfall and abandoned gold mines. Or for a little spoiling and chillaxing time as you are on holiday, relax in naturally heated mineral waters at The Lost Spring Geothermal Spa in Whitianga. You will be surrounded by tropical plants and soothing waterfalls, the thermal waters flow from a spring deep within the earth’s surface. They are have pampering sessions at the on-site day spa.

THE WILD WEST COAST BEACHES You're never too far from the sea in Auckland. In less than an hour's drive from the city centre and 25 minutes from The Stables Cottage, you can find yourself on wild ruggest black sand beaches, where the Tasman Sea meets long, vast stretches of black sand. Visit Muriwai Beach to see the impressive clifftops and gannet colonies and Karekare, made famous as the backdrop for the film The Piano. The west is wild. Te Henga (Bethells) and Muriwai beaches all have a remote, untamed beauty that's good for the soul. Although you’ll feel a world away, many of these beautiful beaches are less than 30 minutes drive from the Cottage, making them ideal day trip destinations. Muriwai is an impressive coastline with cliff-top trails to a huge gannet colony, with easy access and viewing platforms that let you get up close. The Gannet Colony is in residence from August to March. Next to the car park, a short walking track leads to a viewing platform right above the main colony area. Out to sea, the colony continues on two vertical-sided islands. About 1,200 pairs of gannets nest here from August to March each year. A windswept rugged coastline stretching 60 kilometres, and interrupted only by streams and rivers, makes Muriwai one of New Zealand's most spectacular black-sand surf beaches. You can hire blokarts, bikes and kites or simply take a stroll along the boardwalk that hugs the coastline and get a dose of fresh ocean air. Te Henga (Bethells) is smaller than the other beaches, with a cosier feel. The sand begins well back from the surf and there is a shallow lagoon before the river reaches the sea. A walking track crosses the northern headland to secluded O'Neill Bay, another favourite with surfers.

KUMEU AND OUR LOCAL AREA Home to Auckland’s oldest winery, Kumeu boasts award-winning restaurants, fascinating galleries and eclectic speciality shops. If you’re coming from the city you can catch the Riverhead ferry or take a short drive to New Zealand’s oldest riverside tavern, The Riverhead, for a delicious meal and drinks overlooking the water, or visit the nearby brewbar - Hallertau and restaurant for freshly brewed craft beers – both of these classic establishments are with a 20 minute drive of the Cottage. Kumeu combines a rich history with a picturesque countryside setting. The region’s winemaking heritage dates back to the 1940s, when families of Croatian origin opened Auckland’s first wineries. Try a cellar door tasting at one of Kumeu’s many boutique wineries, Soljans, Westbrook Winery, Coopers Creek, Kumeu River and the Hunting Lodge – all ranging in size from small artisan winemakers to some of the best-known names in wine. Make sure you also visit the nearby Woodhill Forest, a stunning natural playground for adventure lovers who love to hike and get some fresh air with the city on the doorstep. A little further past Kumeu you’ll come across Waimauku and the turn off to Muriwai Beach as advised above. Drive further north to Helensville for a hot swim or a wander around an old dairy factory town.
