Everyone knows what pho is, but not too many people know of the Vietnamese runner-up to the famous noodle soup. Bun Bo Hue is a spicy beef noodle soup that is arguably just as good if not better than Pho. Both soup dishes have their own cults behind them and for good reason. Unlike pho, Bun Bo Hue features much more meat, a different, round rice noodle. and an aromatic and spicy broth. Where pho is light and just hits the notes of a nice clean broth, Bun Bo Hue is a heavier yet still refined departure. Due to its less prominent presence here in the states, not too many restaurants champion it as their flagship dish. There are several, however, and we chose the restaurant Hue. Hue's main dish is Bun Bo hue, and we thought they served an authentic bowl of it too. Hue also offers many other traditional dishes from Central Vietnam, all of which we encourage you to try on your next visit!

Poki Run is a relatively young and family-run business in the heart of Milpitas. A decently sized and unassuming shop, we chose Poki run for its fresh fish and simple but impactful topping options. Poki Run’s system is similar to many others, the Chipotle system. Patrons choose their base of sushi rice, brown rice, or greens (half/half available) and proceed down the assembly line to construct a glorious poke bowl. Where most Poke places fall short in our opinion, Poke Run excels. Stellar sushi rice, fresh fish, and fresh produce. This simple yet delicious combination makes Poki Run the best Poke in the area.

Din Tai Fung is a world-renowned Taiwanese soup dumpling restaurant. Well known for its classy take on the traditional dumpling dish among others, Din Tai Fung sits firmly in the higher tiers of Chinese/Taiwanese locales. Their soup dumplings are their main forte, but their other items complement the small bites perfectly. Cucumber salad, green beans, spicy wontons, or noodles you'll find the right size portions at this dumpling stop.

AYCE or all you can eat is considered a cheap alternative to the real deal, however, with Korean barbeque, this can oftentimes be overlooked as the actual process of dining is half the experience. What sets AYCE Korean BBQ places apart from the orthodox pay by plate method is that AYCE is meant for group mingling. What better way to affordably get drunk, have great food, and interact with your dinner all with good company? Unlike the other close competitors of this genre, Yakini Q strikes consistency and quality. Undoubtedly due to their dining space size and close-knit management, Yakini Q is a fantastic way to spend a weekend dinner with friends and family. A hyper intimate and interactive dining experience, Korean barbeque as a genre is all about what happens on the table. Servers bring you the meats and sides you order. It’s up to you to grill, drink and have a blast over it. On top of the infinite food, you're also provided with free Banchan which will already be waiting for you at the table when you are seated. Banchan is an array of traditional Korean side dishes that consist of but are not limited to kimchi, beansprouts, potato, and numerous other unique bites. We highly recommend bringing a few friends as this greatly enhances your experience.

Welcome to San Jose! Boasting a solid traditional burrito at a modest price point the Taqueria has cemented itself as the quintessential burrito of the South Bay. But where the boundaries of a solid burrito stop, the orange sauce transcends. Apply this sauce to the newly vacated mouthful of Mexi-Cali goodness and mutter a guilty ‘no mames guey’ through your face full of heaven. The sauce’s ingredients are a highly guarded secret adding to the legendary status of its position.

Philz coffee... Music to the slumbering Bay Area commoner. A simple yet effective coffee shop, Philz is a bay area exclusive that offers classic and redefining coffee options. Staying true to the caffeinated beverage, Philz is aimed towards die-hard coffee lovers, offering no frappes, whip cream, or otherwise. Just good simple coffee. Enter one of their many locations and be greeted by a strange but unique order-taking system where you place the order with your barista personally. Tell them how you like your coffee, or order off their carefully crafted menu. There’s a good reason behind their presence in the Bay and it’s because they are collectively regarded as our specialty coffee shop. More often than not, you’ll find a Philz somewhere near any of your destinations in the Bay making it a better day out drink rather than a morning coffee run from home.

Selecting a must-try breakfast place for us was a tough decision. Both because of the high popularity and quantity of the genre but also because many of the bigger chains like I-Hop often times cuts close enough to good enough for many folks. We chose Bloom for a variety of reasons and we hope you'll find a glorious start to your day here. Bloom offers a conventional but competently executed menu. Featuring both modern and classic dishes like avocado toasts, or benedicts Blooms menu has something for every breakfast lover. On top of this, we also chose Bloom for their delicious morning cocktails, and although the best bloody mary is still undecided we thought Bloom's did a great job. The atmosphere is quaint-modern, and seating can require early attendance.

If you’re reading this and have never heard of an In-n-Out burger, WELCOME! In-N-Out Burger is a legendary fast-food burger chain that is exclusive to California, though it is slowly popping up in pockets around the nation. In-N-Out champions a fresh, delicious burger at a criminally affordable price point. Why would you go to Mcdonald's or Burgerking to spend $5 for microwaved meat pucks when you can spend that $5 on a double-double at In-N-Out. Everything about their process screams FRESH. Fresh produce, fresh meat, fresh-cut fries. The main reasoning behind their refusal to rapidly expand is that In-N-Out believes in consistency and quality above all else. In-N-Out’s locations are purely based on their logistical range, meaning fresh food must arrive at the restaurants in a timely manner in order for them to uphold this doctrine. Far from a mind-blowing experience, In-N-Out offers a healthier, and extremely mouth-watering burger at little to no cost. Their simple menu of burgers and fries means their effort is placed into perfecting the two items. But don't take it from me, there are millions behind the legendary chain, it’s almost impossible not to have heard.

Fall off the bone ribs? Check. Mouthwatering sides? Check. Locally crafted beer on tap? Yes, please! South Winchester Barbeque is a one-of-a-kind gem in the heart of the South Bay. Their deliverance of purely juicy, and flavorful barbeque is surprisingly impressive, especially when compared to their competitors. Traditionally smoked, and cooked South Winchester's meats consistently meet the bar for good, guilty pleasure. But barbeque isn't always about the meats, the importance of good sides is paramount to making a well-rounded hog feast. Shall we begin? Garlic bread, coleslaw, potato salad, beans, cornbread, and mac n cheese. Is your mouth watering yet? All of these sides are made in-house and are all of them amazing. Better yet they all come in a nice little combo South Winchester has devised to keep you utterly satisfied. There are combos for light barbeque eaters, and then there are combinations for the most gluttonous of us. Wash that all down with a nice glass of craft beer on tap and you have yourself one of the best barbeque joints in town.

Have you ever eaten a square of lasagna so decadent and rich in flavor that you can't help but ask for square after square? Bertucelli's La Villa in downtown Willow Glen is easily the best lasagna you'll ever have. Not a restaurant but an Italian deli, La Villa is the perfect place for lunch. Serving as both an authentic Italian grocery as well as a fully capable kitchen, the deli offers some of the best Italian dishes around. For those unfamiliar with Italian deli formalities, be ready to fight for the attention of your vendor. This place gets packed, and even though there's a line, there will be a dozen heads trying to shout over yours for a sandwich or a lasagna. What makes La Villa's lasagna an unhealthy relationship? The long tendrils of cheese with every fork pull, the pungent ricotta flavor, the scratch dough, and ripened tomatoes. Change your underwear, and then go phone them to reserve a square. Yes, its that popular.

The closest restaurant to your stay that's worth a mention is Antipastos by DeRose. Similar to La Villa, this place is also an authentic Italian deli, with all the fixtures to make it so. Antipastos is extremely convenient as it's about 5 minutes from your stay. They offer everything you'd expect from an authentic Italian deli, with a rotating daily menu featuring prime ribs, pasta dishes, chicken dinners, and more. Their mainstay is their ravioli, which comes in 3 sauces, two of which are shown on the menu, the last being a locally cherished secret; tomato and basil sauce. Just like La Villa, expect a line that doesn't always make sense but for a comforting and oddly familiar experience enjoy the atmosphere of East side culture as every visit is somehow eventful.

This may be a sensitive topic for many, but Pizza in my eyes is seldom done right. What makes a good pizza some may ask? Is it a thick crust, a thin one, NY style, or maybe Detroit? While those options are fantastic classics, I think a good pizza a wood fire scratch pizza. The dough is nice and airy while retaining a crisp, and the ingredients that top it arent overdone, or overly eccentric. Sticking to the classics Pizza Antica at Santana Row is the premier casual dining Pizza spot. As listed above, they offer great oven pizzas that encompass most of the main classics. Margarita, etc etc. Pizza Buco Lupo on the other hand is less high-strung and definitely more of a quick and easy snag.

Yet another homegrown local chain, Tpumps is one of the Bay Area’s boba namesakes. For those with a sweet tooth and inclination towards variety, Tpumps offers a one-of-a-kind drink menu, while silently championing arguably the best boba pearls out there. Tpumps' menu consists of only two teas, green and black, however, their strength is in allowing patrons to customize their own drinks. With the appellation of its name, patrons can choose anywhere from none to three pumps of their selected flavors. Come for the boba and tea alone, or mix it up. With a large variety of flavoring, tpumps could be a new experience with every visit. Aside from theatrics, their actual tea base is of solid quality, but their honey boba is what fans rave about. The perfect chew alongside the not-so-sweet and fresh flavor has garnered the small boba branch a cult following. Pair this with some of the most competitively low prices within the industry and you have a successful and well-deserved boba store.

378 Santana Row
Boba Guys is a formidable and high-quality American-born boba chain. Hosting several locations in the Bay Area, Boba Guys have recently opened a location at Santana Row; a store we're confident will remain on the strip. For a slightly higher price, Boba guys offer the highest quality ingredients amongst competing American brands. Rich creamy flavors, deep authentic tea, and most importantly perfectly cooked pearls make Boba Guys an undisputed champion of the industry. You can't go wrong with any of their choices, and their dedication to consistency ensures every visit is as memorable as the last.
Unlike Boba Guys, which tailors its flavor palette towards American audiences, Yifang offers a truly authentic and world-changing insight into boba. Showing us how the desert drink is really done.

Sightseeing

The Bay Area boasts a wide array of venues and sightseeing locales. You'll find that we love hiking, biking, and the outdoors up here, and many of the FREE trails and vistas reflect this.
Alum Rock Park is a beautiful and local retreat conveniently located steps away from your stay. With a combined mileage of approx 40 or so miles of hiking trail, Alum Rock Park offers a relaxing welcome to the Eastside hills. A well maintained and beginner-friendly course, Alum Rock Park is a healthy-sized recreational zone that is primarily used for its many hiking trails and vistas as well as a recreational park zone tucked in the back, complete with playgrounds, barbeque pits, and a visitor center. Take a mountain bike or your tennis shoes on a scenic adventure through east bay hills which boast a more arid, plains, and rocky biome as opposed to the western Santa Cruz mountain range. Its relatively accessible trails make Alum rock park the ideal beginner's foray into the hobby, and can easily be done with a good pair of tennis shoes. Visit the park’s key point of interest Eagle Rock, a large rock from which you can view the beautiful skyline or challenge yourself to reach Boccardo’s peak.

A longer and more challenging trip, the road to Lick Observatory is a breathtaking and, in some cases world-changing experience. A roughly 50-60 minute drive, the scenic route to the observatory takes visitors on a tour through the backside of the East Foothills. Seen for miles around, Lick Observatory sits solemnly atop Mount Hamilton, eagerly awaiting guests. The experience driving to the observatory is highly variable as weather conditions towards the peak can dramatically alter your experience from others. We've gone on a cloudy day only to break from the gloomy cityscape and rise just above the clouds. The view was absolutely breathtaking. In the winter months, the surrounding mountain is high enough to receive snow, although we don't think the road is open to visitors during this time. The destination, Lick Observatory is a grand and stellar marvel. On the right day's visitors can enter and explore the observatory, even chancing a candid tour from some of the resident astronomers. Beyond the observatory lies a road to the East Bay, Livermore. The sight and journey up to Lick is truly a life experience and worth the half day.

The main vein of the Peninsula's portion of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Skyline is one of, if not the best driving/cycling roads the Bay Area has to offer. With countless branch off roads that takes you to hidden towns, gems, or the beach, this road is the perfect day trip. Be sure to stop at Alice's at the junction for a once in a lifetime experience.

If you are a hiking enthusiast, Mission Peak is the South Bay's challenge. Famous for its grueling climb, Mission Peak is the East Foothills on full display. Climb the arid sun-baked face and ascend to this stunning vista landmarked by its famous totem pole-like marker. Hikers beware, summer trips can prove to be sweltering, and water is advised on this hike no matter the season. Part of what makes Mission Peak such a challenge to new hikers is its steep inclination and seemingly endless switchbacks. For those looking for the more relaxed route to the peak, hikers can opt to enter through *) for a more gradual ascension and with more trees for coverage and shade. Pack some sunscreen and. a good hat as the sun is unforgiving and little shade exists on the face of the mountain.

A Vast Cityscape

A bike will suffice in the Bay Area, however unless you are willing to bike vast expanses your range will afford you little in the way of amenities/resources. A car is imperative!

The many weathers of NorCal

Be prepared! Northern California offers several mild-hot weather conditions. Summers average 80-100f and winters 40-60f. Expect spring and early fall to be 60-70. Rain is sparse but windbreakers are NorCal a la mode. No snow here!
