City/town information

The original capital of Bizkaia, Bermeo is a hidden gem. Nested between the bay of Biscay and the green Sollube mountains, you will find our small, unassuming and down to earth village. Enjoy the beautiful views of the sea and Laida from the port or Tala area. Walk for 5 mins to get to the hidden wild beaches of Tala and have a quick swim in peace or walk 10 min from port to the beautiful sandy beach of Aritzatxu. And if you fancy going for a longer hike, not to worry. You can be on little path walking towards the countryside in only a few minutes. The town itself is charming, local and authentic. You can spot beautiful art, fisherman flats, glass boxes with saints attached to little alleys, and of course local bars with pintxo (pronounced pincho). Make sure you sample the world famous Bermeo Tuna before you leave!

Located on the shore of Urdaibai River, Murueta is a tiny town of 300. Among the most interesting places we'll mention the church of Santa María de Murueta, a nice Neo-classical building dating back to the 19th Century. Likewise, we'd like to mention the old Maiukitza mill, situated at the edge of the marsh, as well as the Goierria neighbourhood that stands among beautiful farmhouses. Magnificent views of the Urdaibai's marshes If we raise our eyes we'll see a shocking and quite high construction. It is the old tile works that despite the fact that does not operate any more, maintains its chimney and structure. From there, we can admire awesome views of the surrounding marshes.

Here is the very first convent established in the Basque Country. Back in the 12th century they settled just outside the main gates of Bermeo, since the town had already ran out of space. Now the convent and church is considered one of the central points of the town and community. The church itself is very serene and there is a little hidden garden as you enter that is a public space but not many people know about it. So if you need a bit of a break from the busy Lamara park, here is the place to go.

This is the most important archaeological site in the Basque Country and a World Heritage Site. A cave that preserves remains of human settlements from over 14,000 years ago, around 50 cave paintings and numerous stalactite and stalagmite formations of great beauty. While it is not possible to physically enter the cave, a 3D guided visit allows you to get to know it in its entirety in an absolutely realistic way, so as not to damage the cavern and keep enjoying this ancient site. Probably Bermeo's most famous sightseeing spot and the filming location for Game of Thrones. This idyllic place is joined to the coast by a stone bridge and a 241-step staircase. So be prepared for a steep climb! The little hermitage goes back all the way to the 9th century. Gaztelugatxe has been the scenario of pirates covens and legends. Do not forget to ring the hermitage bell three times in order to attract good luck and chase away evil spirits. At the end of the steps you can step in a footprint said to have been left by Saint John the Baptist and to bring good luck. Remember to wear sensible clothes and shoes. In spring and autumn the island may be calm and you can savour all of its mysticism and beauty. In summer you won’t be able to resist a dip at one of the small stony beaches around the bottom of the steps. PRACTICAL INFO: Free ticket to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: It is necessary to have a free access ticket in order to visit it. From Bermeo take the A3527 bus that connects Bermeo with Bilbao or use the taxibus (with a maximum capacity of 8 people).

The train station is just to the corner of the main plaza and park and 5 min walk from the flat. You can catch the train all the way to Bilbao, even though it is slower than going by bus. The Casa de Juntas and the Tree of Gernika form a monumental complex declared a Cultural Heritage Site, and are, above all, a symbol of the history of Biscay and the Basque Country. The heart of the complex is the Tree of Gernika. This oak tree is the most universal symbol of all Basques and is the site of important acts, such as the taking of office and the swearing in of the Lehendakari (President of the Basque Government) and of the General Councillor of Biscay. The current Tree of Gernika was planted in 2014 and all have been shoots from the first Tree of Gernika which is remembered.

So as you might have discovered, Bermeo is the Tuna capital of the world! And we are not talking just any old tune. We are talking about Bonito! The most amazing North sea tuna. Now you can buy your goodies from supermarkets or gourmet food store. Or you can go directly to the factory store. Serrats is a wonderful brand and I would specifically recommend the glass jars.
