Sightseeing

A great place to see plants and animals including the rare Grand Cayman Blue Iguana found no where else on Earth. You may see the shy Agouti, but you will see numerous woodland birds and rare and exotic plants. The colour gardens and the lookout tower in the children's area should not be missed. 5 minute drive from home.

The best way to immerse yourself in the trail is with a guide from the National Trust (www.nationaltrust.org.ky). However it is a straightforward one-way trail through different ecosystems with lots of birds and plants along the way. Good footwear is recommended; it is a trail through a rocky woodland with seasonally wet areas. Depending on the time of year it can be very hot and you should pack some water, mosquito repellant and sunscreen just to be safe! The northern trailhead is about 10 minutes away and the southern about 15.

There are a number of public beaches in the Rum Point area (most have bathroom facilities only) and there is also the famous Rum Point Bar, Kaibo bar & restaurant and Starfish Point. Opportunities for diving, watersports and trips to Stingray City are all available from the Rum Point area. Or just relax in the clear shallow waters that make these beaches extremely popular with residents on the weekends.

There are a number of attractions in easy reach along the South Coast . The Blow Holes are a great photo opportunity if the weather is right but there are lots of other things which are not quite as finicky. The Pedro St. James historical site is worth a visit if only for the commanding views. The historic town of Bodden Town has stores, bars and restaurants, a library, post office, 2 gas stations and a large public beach. Stalls on the side of the road sell fresh fruits and vegetables. The tiny village of Breakers boasts two restaurants (Note that the Lighthouse Restaurant is presently closed). The South Coast bar & restaurant has good local food.

The village of East End has the largest grocery store on this side of the island (Fosters), several restaurants, 3 resorts (Compass Point, The Reef Resort and Morritts), dive operators, public beaches, historic sites and parks. There is often live entertainment at the resorts and outside visitors are welcome.

One of the few places that beautiful starfish come into the clear shallow waters for easy viewing. It is considered unacceptable to lift the starfish from the water but they are easy to touch and hold without doing so. You are likely to receive a very stern talking to if you are seen to break the rules! Nearby is the Kaibo restaurant and beach bar with casual dining on the beach downstairs are in the more formal (no swimwear!) upstairs dining room. They also have occasional live entertainment and special dinners.

I hesitate to recommend attractions that displace or commercialize natural ecosystems. But the developers of this attraction at least made an effort to preserve as much as possible. They also employed knowledgeable local guides to make the experience more educational. I visited the caves many times before they were purchased and they are truly beautiful and probably the largest and most diverse on Grand Cayman. The feedback I have had from visitors has all been positive. And its about a two minute drive away.

This is truly one of Cayman's most unspoiled and beautiful beaches. It is about a 15 minute drive to the East and has a small public access point. There are no facilities and most of the land is privately owned but the beach is accessible and all beaches are open to the public. The snorkeling is spectacular in the reef protected bay and you may discover parts of the shipwreck Geneva Kathleen. There is a channel through the reef and it should be avoided particularly if the weather is not great. And keep in mind that this is a remote and relatively secluded beach so keep an eye on your valuables and bring everything you need, especially sunscreen and water! It is also a Marine Reserve so do not take anything from the water.

Just 7 minutes to the south is Willy's Fruit Stand. Open daily with seasonal locally grown fruits and vegetables, drinks and sauces. The picture was taken on May 31st and the assortment will vary from time to time. On this day there were more than 10 varieties of mangoes and also breadfruit, bananas, plantains, papayas, coconut oil, naseberries, freshly squeezed fruit juices, plantain and coconut tarts and hot pepper sauce! The plantain tarts are my personal favourite...

Neighborhoods

North Side is a quiet village of vacation houses, farms, fishermen and miles of beaches. There is a small grocery store and no less than 5 liquor stores, bars, restaurants and a gas station. There are trails and caves to explore if you grow tired of snorkeling the pristine coral reefs that protect the shoreline. If you are lucky you can purchase freshly caught fish at the public dock (the restaurants grab up the catch quickly) or you can just let the restaurants cook it for you.

Food scene

Very nearby (about a 4 minute drive) is this classic casual restaurant. Owner Chef Philippe hails from the French wine country but has been here long enough to get local food right! The menu is an assortment of local and international dishes, the dining is open air overlooking the sea and the service is very relaxed and at island pace. If you are in a hurry this is not your place, but if you like good food with a beautiful view it is worth the wait. And they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A two minute drive will get you to The Caboose for inexpensive local and international dishes is a very casual outdoor setting. The menu changes often but usually features a local dish of some sort daily. I cannot emphasize this enough: Very Casual!

About 10 minutes away in the tiny village of Breakers is SOuth Coast Bar and Grill. The original restaurant (Reef Point) was completely destroyed by hurricane Ivan in 2004 but the newer, "fancier" establishment is the same owners with a knack for making good local food. The steamed Turbit, conch stew and turtle stew are all authentically prepared and the service is friendly. The views are also fantastic, look for the colourful parrotfish feeding just a few feet from your table.

At Chisholms (and most gas stations) you will find the archetypical Caymanian mid morning fare: the patty. Once only made with beef they now come in several flavours including vegetarian and chicken. And Chisholms also has Jamaican patties all hot and ready to go for a cheap spicy lunch on the go! Add Tabasco or Pickapeppa sauce to complete the experience. And don't forget a cold beverage to wash it down! And since Chisholms is the district grocery store you can stock up on just about anything you need and the wine selection is not bad either. About a 7 minute drive to the west.

I don't normally recommend places I have never been but numerous friends have sung the praises of this small restaurant located at the Health City complex about 15 minutes away. They say the food is great and the prices are reasonable. Probably not the most romantic setting (next to a hospital) but I am told it is worth a visit. I will update if I do!

Driving Around

There are a couple of things to know about driving in the Cayman Islands: We drive on the Left! And we have lots of roundabouts. Other than that roads are in good condition and well posted and drivers tend to be courteous and understanding. Like everywhere else you should avoid the rush hour traffic going in to town in the morning and returning in the evening but traffic in the Eastern districts is light pretty much all the time. And there are a lot of points of interest just a short drive away.

Expect Diversity

Less than half of the people who live here where born here. The rest come from over 100 countries Worldwide. A requirement to work here is a working knowledge of English, so communication should never be an issue. Generally the community is quite conservative and swimsuits and public displays of affection are frowned upon in public places. We islanders have been welcoming people to our shores for a very long time and you should expect nothing less than a warm welcome every where you go.
