ABOUT Two Whales is a small, family run, independent coffee shop and restaurant overlooking Robin Hood Bay in the small township of Port Rexton on the Bonavista Peninsula. This is our 14th season in business and our reputation grows every year. According to many of our customers we serve the best espresso coffees on the island . We serve a range of premium teas and soft drinks including our special homemade organic lemonade. Part of our philosophy is that we do not serve anything that we will not eat or drink ourselves. We serve delicious, healthy vegetarian food and yummy cakes. We use as much organic and/or locally sourced ingredients as we can, make and bake just about everything ourselves in our own kitchen and take great care in what we do.

The story of the Devil’s Footprints has long been an attraction for visitors to the community of Keels. Imprints in the rocks around you resemble a cloven, hoof-shaped footprint. These cavities continue to be a source of curiosity and bewilderment. Local stories claim the footprint’s origins are supernatural, and the tracks are impressions left where the Devil danced over Keels. https://discoverygeopark.com/geosite/keels-devils-footprints/

The spectacular multi-coloured rock layers exposed here at Brook Point are from the Crown Hill Formation. These rocks are Ediacaran in age but do not contain the Ediacaran fossils you can observe on the other side of the peninsula. These coastal cliffs are a classic example of sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks are one of three main rock types and can form from particles of sediment of all different types. Layers of sediment build and build, eventually getting buried under the newer layers. Over time, these multiple layers are squished and cemented together to form rock. In this case, a range of sand, silt, and mud was eroded by rivers from an ancient volcanic mountain range. The brilliant red colour of the rocks is due to the rusting or oxidation of fine, iron-rich grains when exposed to the ancient atmosphere or oxidized sea. Other colour variations are due to volcanic ash and chemical changes from ancient fluids percolating through the sediment. https://discoverygeopark.com/map/

The Dungeon Provincial Park The coastline and steep cliffs surrounding Cape Bonavista are spectacular examples of the North Atlantic Ocean’s wave action and erosive power. Unique shoreline features are due to the ancient sedimentary rocks’ composition and thousands of years of continuous coastal erosion. https://discoverygeopark.com/map/
