Friðheimar is a unique greenhouse where tomatoes are grown all year round and you can enjoy the taste of the crop by either sit down at the restaurant in between the plants or you can take delicious food souvenirs back home with you. The owner also breeds horses, and puts on a horse show - in fourteen different languages.

Laugarvatn sits almost directly between Þingvellir National Park and the Geysir Geothermal Area, two points of the Golden Circle. It´s a small town with several opportunities for travelers and locals to live and love! Lindin restaurant has it´s own charm - run by the same chef for years which makes sure the food you get is delicious! Fontana Spa has geothermal water in several hot tubs, three steam rooms and you can walk straight from the spa in Laugarvatn and take a swim with the fishes (I though doubt there is any). Third of my favorites in, or I have to say close by, Laugarvatn is Efstidalur! There you get a glance of the farm life in Iceland - watching the cows while you buy the family a local made ice cream! This family farm offers a variety of products straight from the farm, such as the famous ice cream, skyr and feta cheese. The restaurant also offers beef from the farm and other local food. Absolutely a must to visit - especially if you are traveling with kids. You might also want to check out https://laugarvatnadventure.is/

In Efstidalur you will get a unique and different experience. Right in the middle of the Golden Circle, you get a glance of the farm life in Iceland. This family farm has opened up for tourists and offers a variety of products straight from the farm, such as the famous ice cream, skyr and feta cheese. Hungry/Want to grab a good bite quick/Want to try the famous Icelandic Hot Dog? Then - Pylsuvagninn by the bridge in Selfoss is the place to go. You can either use the drive through or use the hatch sale and choose where you want to enjoy the delicious food you buy there. I often go there (don´t tell anyone) and I think almost everything is good - but if you still haven´t tasted our hot dogs with Kókómjólk (chocolate milk) I would recommend that at least one of you will try it!

I bet that Huppu Ísbúð (Huppa´s Ice Cream Shop) is the most popular Ice Cream Store in Iceland and it started all here in Selfoss. Now they have 7 stores around the country! You´ll find it across the bridge when you drive into Selfoss - the same building as Hotel Selfoss. You might want to try it out!

Definitely my favorite restaurant in Selfoss! The Chicken Salat, California Club sandwich and the pizzas are my pick most of the time but I´ve never tasted a bad food there. They also serve a very nice Cafe Latte and delicious cakes! You´ll find the restaurant very easily since it´s located by the main street through the town, beside one of the main supermarket Krónan.

Eyrarbakki is a small town which lies by the sea on the south coast of Iceland, only 12 minutes drive from Selfoss (and a part of the same municipality). It´s quiet, bu it has so much to offer! If you would like to experience colourful houses and a slow pace of life, then Eyrarbakki is the place to visit. The most prominent house in Eyrarbakki village is Húsið - the House - which is one of Iceland's oldest houses, built in 1765. It was built back when Eyrarbakki was one of the most vibrant commercial villages in Iceland and Danish merchant families lived in it for some 200 years. In one of the colorful little houses in Eyrarbakki, you will notice a small convenience store. This is Verslun Guðlaugs Pálssonar - the convenience store of Guðlaugur Pálsson, which Guðlaugur managed here at Sjónarhóll from 1919 until he died in 1993 at 97! This little store, Laugabúð, looks almost exactly like it did all these years ago and visiting it is like stepping back in time. Last but not least, we recommend walking along the seawall looking out for the birds and some seals, feel the smell of the sea and experiencing the peace that comes with it. You can of course take a longer walk along the black beach on the way to Þorlákshöfn - either to the sand defense wall or all the way to the bridge!

Stokkseyri is the second charming village in our municipality, also located alongside the South coast of Iceland and in 15 minutes drive from Selfoss. It´s known for galleries, Ghost Center (my favorite), and the Elves and Northern Lights Museum, located in the Cultural Centre. Stokkseyri also offers one of Iceland's most famous seafood restaurants, Fjöruborðið which the chef of this house highly recommends. You can also find a small outdoor swimming pool, a coffee shop and .... you can book a kayak tour in Stokkseyri - so much fun! East of Stokkseyri is Knarrarósviti Lighthouse open for public during summertime. Last but not least is The Wildlife Museum which is dedicated to hunting and wildlife and contains many mammals and birds.

There are some hidden places in Iceland, and one of them is the mystical Nauthúsagil ravine in South Iceland, which translated to English means Bull Shed Ravine! It´s absolutely one of our favorite places in Iceland and we always take our friends from abroad to see it and we strongly recommend that you go there too! It´s close to Seljalandsfoss (maybe 15 minutes drive inside the land on a not so nice road but so worth it) which you probably have heard of and should visit as well + Glúfrabúi waterfall.

Absolutely one of my favorite outdoor resort nearby is Helliskógur forest. Hellisskógur would be translated to English as "The Cave Forest"! It is "on the other side" of the river - 2.5 km from Hotel Selfoss. Many people go there to enjoy nature by the river Ölfusá, take exercise and explore the cave called Stóri - Hellir. The cave was formed at a latter glacial period by sea erosion. Sea levels have been higher than now several times and signs of sea erosion can be seen on more cliffs in the area which are made of around 0, 7 – 3, 1 million year old basalt. The cave was previously used to store hay in the back and as a sheepcote in the front. It was once believed that the cave was haunted by a ghost wearing a blue scarf. The story tells of a young man who was broken hearted and hung himself in the cave using a long blue scarf.

Sólheimar (“Home of the Sun”) is an eco-village in Southwest Iceland, in the municipality of Grímsnes og Grafningshreppur, and is famous for its devotion to community living, artistic ethics and sustainability. Currently, Sólheimar has an approximate population of 100 people, many of whom deal with learning difficulties. Every year, Sólheimar allows volunteers to come and help the community with their various environmentally-friendly projects, be it harvesting the year’s crops or helping residents with their day to day lives. Other projects ran by Sólheimar include harnessing geothermal energy, recycling and producing organic horticulture. Aside from the care the village provides, Sólheimar is also home to a great number of sustainable local businesses and workshops, including those dedicated to candle-making, carpentry, weaving, soap-making, arts and crafts. Sunna, Iceland’s largest provider of organic fruit and vegetables, also runs a shop at Sólheimar. It is an absolutely unique place to visit which we highly recommend!

In only 19 minutes driving distance you´ll find Kerið (occasionally Anglicized as Kerith or Kerid) which is a volcanic crater lake located in the Grímsnes area in south Iceland, along the Golden Circle. It was formed about 6,500 years ago and lies at the northern end of a row of craters known as Tjarnarhólar. It is oval, about 270 m long, 170 m wide and 55 m deep: the depth of the water at the bottom varies between 7 and 14 m. According to an old tradition, a rise in the water level here is accompanied by a corresponding fall in the pond on Búrfell in Grímsnes and vice versa.

You have to take swimsuits with you!

Iceland is privileged with many natural resources and geothermal water is one of them, filling our natural hot springs, nature pools, swimming pools and baths all around the country. "Sundhöll Selfoss" is no exception and there are good indoor and outdoor pools, a selection of hot and cold tubs and not to forget the water slide!

Clothes and shoes to bring with you (May - August)

The weather here is not as cold as everyone thinks. It is perhaps milder than you would expect. The key to remember is that the weather here is unpredictable and changes quickly. Sometimes you can experience four seasons in a day. So, you need to be prepared, and your wardrobe needs to be flexible: Base layers – your normal undergarments, combined with t-shirts. Lightweight sweater or fleece Swimwear Lightweight trousers – preferably made out of material suitable for the outdoors and are quick-drying. Jacket – a waterproof and windproof shell jacket that will work over the top of your fleece.

You can´t buy a beer or wine in Icelandic supermarkets!

Vínbúðin is the official liquor store of Iceland. You cannot buy alcoholic beverages in any other stores (you might see Pilsner or Beer in supermarkets but in Iceland it means an alcohol free beer). Vínbúðin is closed on Sundays.
實用短句

Takk fyrir!

"Takk fyrir" means "thank you"! It´s two of the easiest words in Icelandic to learn and to pronouns - just if you want to try!
