2349 Camino Baca GrandeAs with all stupas, an obelisk shaped post made out of juniper was placed in the center. Elaborate mandalas and offerings were placed in the four directions. Precious relics from India and Tibet, as well as 10,000 clay tsa tsa’s (miniature stupa’s) were handmade with brass molds then sun-dried, painted and placed inside. Boulder resident and Tibetan, Ugyen Shenpen, arranged all the sacred interior elements. Thus the stupa was empowered.
Thirty-eight years later, a small group of people have taken on the task of making structural repairs, redoing the exterior stucco layer and rearranging the surrounding rock garden into a more mandalic configuration with proper path ways. A statue of Padmasambhava holding the world was added to a gold leafed niche and the stupa was transformed from the “little stupa” to the Padmasambhava Stupa.

Ziggurats are large structures first built in ancient Mesopotamia out of sun-dried bricks. According to archaeological interpretations of ancient texts, they were typically constructed as shrines atop large complexes of buildings, with either a series of ramps on one side or a single spiral ramp leading to the top. Ancient ziggurats were intended to be dwelling places for the gods, not for public worship.
This is not the case in Crestone. Instead, public access is encouraged. Visible for miles, the Crestone Ziggurat rises from a rocky hill on the southeast edge of the Baca Grande. After purchasing the land in 1978, American businessman and father of Queen Noor of Jordan, Najeeb Halaby, commissioned the ziggurat as a private place for prayer and meditation.
Today, the ziggurat is open to the public. Visitors can climb the spiral ramp to the top, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area, making it a perfect spot for reflection and quiet contemplation. Visitors are encouraged to arrange rocks in a personal design at its base as a form of meditation and intention setting.

This was a Carmelite hermitage for 37 years. It still offers Catholic mass.
Now called: "The Hermitage of Unwavering Samadhi.” It will be home to the Center of Contemplative Research, a newly founded Colorado nonprofit in close affiliation with the well-known Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies, both of which were founded and guided by B. Alan Wallace, PhD. The Hermitage will be a place for well-trained contemplative practitioners to spend months and years in long-term meditation retreat, in dialogue and collaboration with scientists who wish to study the nature of consciousness from a non-materialist perspective. For an introduction to the Center for Contemplative Research, visit www.ccr-usa.org. B. Alan Wallace will soon dialogue with Eva Natanya, who is in residence as a teacher here at Miyo Samten Ling, in a 6-day intensive online retreat in August, called “Dwelling in the Heart of Reality: Parallel Practices in Buddhist Dzogchen and Christian Mysticism.” To register, visit http://contemplative-consciousness.net/lampeter-2020-virtual-retreat. Also already in residence at the Hermitage are Amie Diller, Managing Director, and Doug Veenhof, building and Land Manager. They look forward to meeting the Crestone community.

OVER THE LAST 440,000 YEARS, the Great Sand Dunes have shifted and blown in gusts to heights of 750 feet, making them the largest dunes in North America. Besides the great beauty of the windswept ocean of sand, the arid landscape runs directly up to the feet of the Sangre de Cristo Range, a narrow strip of the Rocky Mountains.
As the ecosystems collide near the dunes, the creation of the wondrous place can be perfectly summed up. Each part of the environment aided the creation of the sweeping dunes. The Great Sand Dunes lie in the flood plain of the Rio Grande and its tributaries. Over time, the river carried sand deposits into the area, and wind swept the sand to the base of the mountains, causing the dunes to rise out of the valley.
Since the dunes lie on the flood plain, just a few feet beneath the dry sand are precious water deposits, a rare commodity in the arid Southwest. In 2004, the area was made a national preserve, to protect the dunes and the water that lies just beneath the high desert surface.
